He made the announcement in Times Square, citing a drop in coronavirus cases as the reasoning, via the New York Times.

Starting on Monday (March 7), students will no longer have to wear masks indoors at public schools. However, children under 5 must continue to wear masks because they are not yet eligible for vaccines.

People will also not be required to show proof of vaccination to go to restaurants, gyms and other venues, including movie theaters. Masks are still required on public transit and certain venues, like Broadway theaters.

“It’s time to reopen our city,” he declared.

New York City currently has about 500 daily cases and 25 hospitalizations, compared to 40,000 cases and 1,000 hospitalizations per day in January.

Another politician just went viral for scolding kids for wearing masks.
