Frontrunner Emerges to Portray the Late Amy Winehouse in Upcoming Biopic

There’s a frontrunner to play the late Amy Winehouse in the upcoming biopic Back to Black.

Throughout the search, it was “important to the creative team behind the movie” to cast someone “as authentic as possible to Winehouse’s own background.”

Marisa Abela, one of the stars of HBO and BBC drama Industry, is apparently the top pick, according to Variety, though there are other actresses still in contention, too. Marisa is of Maltese, Libyan, Russian and Polish descent and is of Jewish heritage.

Amy was found deceased on July 23, 2011.

It was announced earlier this month that the biopic would be moving forward after securing a director. A few years ago, one actress said portraying Amy would be her dream role.
