Doja Cat's 'Elvis' Song 'Vegas' Deemed Ineligible For Oscars

Doja Cat‘s song will unfortunately not be eligible for an Oscar.

The 27-year-old musician debuted “Vegas” over the summer, which was featured on the official soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann‘s Elvis.

However, it was just announced that the song can not be considered for Best Original Song at the upcoming 2023 Oscars.

According to Variety, “Vegas”, as well as the original score for Tár, are both ineligible.

For “Vegas”, it can’t be considered because of the guidelines.

The song was co-written with producers Roget Chahayed and Yeti Beats, and features a key lyric from Elvis Presley‘s “Hound Dog” throughout.

“You ain’t nothing but a…” is heard throughout the track, and according to the guidelines, words and music must be “original and written specifically for the motion picture.”

As for Tár‘s score by composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, it was deemed ineligibile because of the insufficient amount of original, clearly audible music, going against guidelines.

To be eligible, the scores must not be “diluted by the use of pre-existing music.”
