Olivia Olson Talks About the Negative Side of Finding Fame in 'Love Actually' & Revealed She Auditioned for Major Disney Roles After the Movie

Olivia Olson emerged as one of the brightest young talents after making her big debut as Joanna Anderson in Love Actually back in 2003.

The 30-year-old actress showed off her superstar voice, belting out a version of Mariah Carey‘s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” that proved she had the pipes for a music career as well.

However, Olivia recently opened up about the negative side effects of being thrust into the spotlight in the blockbuster.

In an interview with The Sun, Olivia said that she felt like an outsider after the movie premiered and was treated terribly by the industry. She added that she had a hard time finding additional roles in front of the camera, which led to her decision to pursue a career in voice acting where “it didn’t matter what I looked like.”

“I thank my parents for being such a support system, because it’s kind of a miracle I didn’t have a mental breakdown,” the young star admitted.

Olivia said that casting directors told her she needed to lose weight from a very young age.

“Any person who says that to a kid needs to re-evaluate, but it’s just how the world worked at the time,” she added.

Making matters worse, Olivia said that it was challenging for her to go back to school after the movie premiered.

“I was away from my school for so long filming Love Actually and when I came back it was like, ‘Oh, you’re a celebrity now,’” she recalled. “I did have friends, but I didn’t always feel like I belonged there, I felt like an outcast.”

Students bullied her so much that she didn’t want to showcase her talent for fear of being branded a show off.

Olivia also revealed that she was in the running for Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato‘s roles in major Disney projects – Hannah Montana and Camp Rock.

Despite the negative aspects of fame, Olivia added that she is grateful for Love Actually.

“I was ecstatic when I won the part and over the years, as people have rewatched it and rewatched it, it’s become part of everyone’s hearts,” she said.
