Paul McCartney Reveals How He Paid Tribute to John Lennon & Why He Couldn't Talk About His Friend After He Died

Paul McCartney was so shocked by his bandmate John Lennon‘s death that he wasn’t able to speak about it for years.

The 80-year-old member of the Beatles lost his friend tragically in 1980.

Paul explained why he felt unable to pay tribute to John in the aftermath of his death and revealed the way that he was ultimately able to get his feelings out.

The musician told the Daily Mail that the sudden death was “difficult” and recalled the aftermath of the devastating news.

“I remember getting home from the studio on the day that we’d heard the news he died. Turning the TV on and seeing people say, ‘Well, John Lennon was this’ and ‘What he was, was this’ and ‘I remember meeting him,’” he explained. “It had hit me so much that I couldn’t really talk about it.”

“I was like, ‘I can’t be one of those people. I can’t go on TV and say what John meant to me.’ It was just too deep. I couldn’t put it into words,” he added.

Two years after John‘s death, Paul paid tribute to him in his song “Here Today.”

One line in particular – “What about the night we cried? (What about the night we cried?) / Because there wasn’t any reason left to keep it all inside” – harkened back to a specific night they shared.

Paul explained that they “told each other a few truths” that night and solidified how they felt about each other that night.

If you missed it, last year Paul shared how he thought John would react to one aspect of the modern music industry.
