Tina Turner, Music Icon & Queen of Rock 'n' Roll, Passes Away at 83

Tina Turner has sadly died.

The legendary performer, known as the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, passed away on Wednesday (May 24) after a long illness at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, according to her spokesperson.

She was 83 at the time of her death.

“With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model,” her spokesperson, Bernard Doherty, said in a statement via Deadline.

Tina is known for dozens of smash hit singles, including “Proud Mary,” “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” “Private Dancer,” “The Best” and “GoldenEye.”

She sold over 180 million records worldwide, and received 12 Grammy Awards, includnig three Grammy Hall of Fame awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She also became the first Black artist and first woman to be on the cover of Rolling Stone.

She’s a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, first with Ike Turner in 1991 and as a solo artist in 2021.

She first became famous in the late 1960s as the singer of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue before leaving her husband Ike Turner following years of physical and emotional abuse, staging a massively successful solo comeback.

Her life story was chronicled in 1993′s What’s Love Got To Do With It, and in the 2021 Broadway musical Tina – The Tina Turner Musical.

A private funeral ceremony is expected for family and close friends. She had just lost her son Ronnie in December of 2022.
