As she started to sing “(Simply) the Best,” she confessed during the performance that she didn’t totally know the words.

“I’m trying, y’all!” she declared, before adding: “Whatever, I can’t see the words.”

“God bless you, Tina Turner, BET, hip-hop!” she said as she finished out the rendition.

While some viewers found the performance amusing, harkening back to her viral 1996 National Tree Lighting performance, others felt it was too disrespectful.

“It was an extraordinary privilege to celebrate the life and legacy of Ms. Tina Turner at BET Awards 2023. Having the incomparable Ms. Patti LaBelle on our stage honoring one of her contemporaries was an equal privilege. Due to the crowd’s enthusiasm, the teleprompter was obstructed, obscuring Ms. LaBelle’s view of the lyrics. Nonetheless, we couldn’t be more grateful to Ms. LaBelle for lending her incredible talent to this moment,” a rep told THR.

Patti also just opened up about her dating life.
