'Cats' Is Set to Lose 'At Least $71 Million'

Cats is proving to be a major financial risk.

The much-buzzed about film, which has received major criticism from both critics and moviegoers in the past weeks, is set to lose “at least $71 million,” Deadline reported on Sunday (December 29).

“Our finance sources informed over this weekend that the Universal/Amblin/Working Title feature adaptation of the near $4 billion-grossing Andrew Lloyd Webber stage musical is bound to lose at least $71M — that is if the pic reaches a global box office result of $100M; meaning $40M stateside and $60M abroad. This is based off a production cost of $90M net–the pic was shot on soundstages in London–and a $115M estimated global P&A spend,” the report reads.

“Broken further out, total WW theatrical rentals, global free/pay TV and global home entertainment revenues including streaming are expected to total at least $155M. Home entertainment costs plus global P&A stands around $226M we’re informed. Universal wasn’t available for comment on these numbers.”

If you didn’t know, the film wasn’t even completed until days before the release date.

Dwyane Johnson Calls Out Friend for Seeing 'Cats' Twice, But Not 'Jumanji'

Dwayne Johnson is calling out a friend of his who just tweeted about going to the movies to watch Cats for a second time.

The 47-year-old actor wants to know why his pal hasn’t seen Jumanji: The Next Level yet, despite going to see Cats twice.

“Round 2 of Cats? Devan!!! We family!! Where’s ’round 1 of Jumanji‘?? 😂 🕺🏽,” Dwayne tweeted in response to his journalist friend Devan Coggan.

Cats has been ridiculed by the media ever since the film hit theaters last week. After five days in theaters, the film has grossed $11.1 million.

'Cats' Has Been Removed from Universal's FYC Campaign Page

Before the new movie musical Cats was released, many people expected it to be in consideration for accolades during awards season. But after the reviews for the film, those awards chances are pretty much non-existent.

Universal Pictures had previously featured Cats on its For Your Consideration campaign website, which listed screening dates for eligible awards voters. Now, the movie has been removed from the page, just a few days after its release into theaters.

Cats has received two awards nominations so far – a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song for “Beautiful Ghosts,” written by Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber, plus a Golden Reel Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Musical for Feature Film.

'Cats' Director Is Asked to 'Explain Himself' & He Does!

Tom Hooper, the director of Cats, sits down for an interview where he’s asked about what drove him to make the film, which is being critically panned, why the Cats look the way they look, the size of the furniture and streets in the film, and more.

The interview began with him being asked, “Sir, explain yourself.”

“Where to start? [Laughs] Well, it starts with me being 8 years old and being taken to see Cats and falling in love with it. I have actually a very vivid recollection of that experience….I remember thinking Les Mis was particularly exciting because that musical had never been adapted as a movie before. And I was thinking, Well, are there any other great musicals left that have not been adapted? I thought about Cats and about how much I had really loved it as a kid. I knew Steven Spielberg had optioned it in the mid-’90s. Well, why had it never been made? Was it that people hadn’t figured out what the cats would look like? And was there perhaps some shift in visual effects, some technology that might allow a way of making it work?,” Tom explained to Vulture.

Then, speaking about if he had ever considered prosthetics over visual effects, he said, “I actually did start by going through a physical prosthetics route because, during my first conversations, visual effects seemed to be so expensive. But the tricky thing with prosthetics is you end up with a kind of full-face prosthetic and you lose all performance. And then you still have nonmoving ears. And then you’re like, ‘So you’re only going to CGI the ears? If you’ve done that, then what’s the point of doing it selectively?’ Then, if you added any kind of fur to bodies, you’d gain a centimeter of weight everywhere, which doesn’t help. So all roads led me back to the visual-effects route.”

About the perspective and size of the Cats, Tom explained, “If a cat was standing on hind legs, what’s the difference? And it’s about two and a half to one. So everything is built two and a half to one. But then you still end up with a street that’s only as wide as you can make it in the studio — whereas if you’ve applied the two and a half rule, it would be superwide. But it was never meant to be that literal. Obviously, if we’re cats, the world would be bigger. But it also puts you back in a childlike position because, of course, when you’re a toddler, the table is higher than you are. So it has that trick of perspective. The look on people’s faces when they visited our set was one of childlike wonder.”

James Corden Reacts to 'Cats' Bad Reviews: 'I've Heard It's Terrible'

James Corden, who stars in the movie musical Cats in the role of Bustopher Jones, did an interview where he admitted he hasn’t seen the film yet.

“I haven’t seen it, I’ve heard it’s terrible,” James said on Radio 2’s Zoe Ball Breakfast show on Monday morning. “I’ve not seen it.”

“The reviews have been a bit harsh. It’s got some brilliant reviews,” the host responded.

James then added, “That has always been the musical Cats. I’ll catch it one day I imagine.”

Judi Dench Says Her 'Cats' Character is Transgender

Judi Dench is the first woman to play the role of Old Deutoronomy in the musical Cats and now she says the character is transgender.

The 85-year-old actress was actually supposed to appear in the West End stage production of Cats in 1981, but she has to drop out when she snapped her achilles tendon.

“Its glorious to have been included in it, I must say,” Judi told Out about being included in the movie version. “[It was] nerve wracking, because all I can hear is Brian Blessed all the time in the production that I wasn’t able to be in.” (Blessed played Old Deutoronomy in the stage show)

Judi says that it was “totally unexpected” to play the traditionally male role. She added, “I kind of call it ‘trans Deuteronomy,’ is the part for me, you know.”
