'Criminal Minds' Showrunner Opens Up About the Series Finale: 'We Didn't Want it to End'

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! DO NOT READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!

After 15 seasons on air, Criminal Minds aired it’s final episode tonight on CBS.

At the end of the two part episode and after defeating “The Chameleon”, there was a retirement party for David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), but it was really a farewell party for Penelope (Kirsten Vangsness), who took another job.

The team shared their final goodbyes to one of the longest running chatacters on the series – Penelope – they had one last walk around the BAU headquarters before heading off to their next assignments.

Showrunner and executive producer Erica Messer opened up about the final episode and never wanting the series to actually end.

She told ET, “I knew that we would never please everyone with the final hour of the TV series that had been on 15 seasons because… we didn’t want to write the ending. We didn’t want it to end.”

“We wanted to leave it with, they’re going to go fight another case and that will be that. We just won’t go with them this time. That was the overwhelming majority saying, ‘Can’t the show just go on?’ And part of it was also, if the show ever got picked up to keep going, which, who knows if that would ever happen, we can untie that bow really easily and keep telling stories.”

And about that Post-it note that Penelope wrote and stuck between the crack of her desk for someone else to find – only Kirsten and Erica know what’s on it.

“You can choose your own adventure with that. You can decide what it said, but we felt like even if we wrote it [out] and even if you saw it… We talked about what it was, but if she had written it down and somebody ever found it or saw it, it probably wouldn’t mean as much as what you might hope for what it says.”

Erica adds, There’s one last little mystery for Criminal Minds and it’s what was on Garcia’s note.”

'Criminal Minds' Will End After Season 15

The long-running series Criminal Minds has been renewed for a 15th and final season.

The show is currently in the middle of its 14th season and the final season will air during the 2019-20 season. The final season will have 10 episodes and the final episode count will be 325.

“It’s really bittersweet, but I’m so, so grateful to CBS for giving us this heads-up,” showrunner Erica Messer told TVLine about the final season news. “I think one of my biggest fears was always, ‘Oh man, what if we don’t know’ and then they just don’t bring back the show? But they respect this series and the cast and the crew and the fans enough to end this properly.”

Joe Mantengna, Matthew Gray Gubler, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler, and Adam Rodriguez currently star on the show.

Here are 21 more shows ending in the 2019.
