Ben Platt Responds to Criticism for Not Meeting Fans at 'Dear Evan Hansen' Stage Door

Ben Platt has taken to Twitter to respond to some messages of hate he has received for not meeting fans at the stage door following performances of Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen.

Fans regularly line up outside of the actors’ stage door following each show to greet the stars while they exit the theater. While Ben often does greet fans and signs autographs, he sometimes is too exhausted from his emotionally draining (and Tony-winning) performance to spend the extra time with fans after work.

“Performing Dear Evan Hansen every night is wonderful but also hugely tough – as much as I would like to be out there every night, very often I cannot come to the stage door after the performance,” Ben wrote in a note on Twitter. “My priority must always be self-care so I can recreate the same quality show each night. That’s my job, and what each and every audience member is paying for and deserves.”

“Before you tweet hateful things about how I don’t value out incredible fans when I can’t come to the door, please pause to consider that my responsibility to them is first and foremost to give my all each night. I preserve myself because I value each of them deeply,” he added.

While getting to meet a star after a Broadway show is an added bonus sometimes, the performers have no obligation to greet fans as a meet-and-greet is not part of the ticket being purchased!

'Dear Evan Hansen' Star Ben Platt on Vocal Rest Before Tony Awards Performance

Dear Evan Hansen star Ben Platt won’t be performing leading up to this weekend’s Tony Awards.

The 23-year-old Broadway star took to his Twitter to announce that his doctor had ordered vocal rest ahead of his big award show performance.

“Hello, wonderful Evan Hansen fans. I wanted to share that I just came from the doctor and I’m so sorry to report that he’s put me on vocal rest, which means I have to call out of the show tonight,” he wrote.

Evan added, “I work very hard to avoid missing, but I must of course listen to the doctor’s orders and preserve long-term health to miss as few future shows as possible.”

It sounds like Ben has high hopes that he’ll be better in time for the Tonys on Sunday though!

“Hoping to be back sometime this weekend, and the doc is certain that at the latest I’ll be A-OK by the time we reach Sunday night for the Tony performance. I feel alright but just can’t make a peep. I’m so, so very sorry to disappoint. Much Love. Sincerely, Me,” Ben concluded.

In addition to performing, Ben is also nominated for Best Actor in a Musical.
