Dixie Chicks On Being The First Targets Of 'Cancel Culture': 'It Can Ruin People’s Lives'

Dixie Chicks make a special appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, airing Monday (March 16), and open up about their comeback.

The ladies – Martie Maguire, Emily Robison and Natalie Maines – chat about their hiatus from music and what it was like to be among the first celebrities to feel the impact of “cancel culture.”

“I think we were one of the first people to feel that cancel culture,” Natalie tells Ellen. “What we said back then, or what I said back then, would not even be a thing today because it was really mild compared to what people say today.”

“But you know, on one hand everyone’s got this platform where they can say whatever they want to say,” Natalie continues. “But on the other hand this platform can move really quickly and ruin people’s lives.”

Later, the Dixie Chicks play “Who Would Natalie Rather?” to help their bandmate find a potential suitor, and hit the stage for a special performance of the title track off their first studio album in 14 years, “Gaslighter.”

Dixie Chicks: 'It Gets Better' Video

Martie Maguire and Emily Robinson of the Dixie Chicks, and more recently the Court Yard Hounds, speak out against bullying in support of the It Gets Better project.

Lots of celebrities have lent their support to the campaign after the recent suicides of multiple gay youth who were being bullied because of their orientation.

“If you are being bullied or teased for any reason, we want you to know that it does get better,” they said. “We can’t necessarily put ourselves in your shoes, but we do know from experience that being true to yourself and sticking to what your believe in and who you are, no matter what people say or think about you takes strength… we admire your strength and it does get better.”
