Pharrell Williams gave an emotional live performance of his song “Letter to My Godfather” on last night’s (January 6) episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The 46-year-old hit-maker was joined onstage by a choir for the rendition of the song that’s dedicated to legendary music executive Clarence Avant and appears in his Netflix documentary, The Black Godfather.
“Clarence Avant connects us all through his incredible impact since before I was born up until now,” Pharrell said in a statement about the song. “He’s the godfather to so many of us — and not just African Americans, most of the industry.”
The Black Godfather came out back in June. It tells the story of Avant‘s rise to become one of the most legendary music industry executives ever, coming to be known as the “Godfather of Black Music.”
