Barbara Walters' Final Show on 'The View' Will Air May 16

Barbara Walters will be signing off from her longtime hit daytime talk show The View on May 16 after seventeen years on the air.

“[I'm excited] to find out if there’s something I can do besides television,” Barbara told ABC News. “I did not sleep last night. I thought, ‘Am I doing it now? Should I do it later?’ But then I thought it was better to go when people are saying, ‘Why is she leaving?’ than, ‘Thank goodness she’s leaving!’”

Barbara announced nearly a year ago that she planned on departing daytime television and now her farewell has been set for May. She will continue to executive produce the series and be a lifelong member of ABC News.

“In this business there are legends, there are icons, and then there is Barbara Walters,” Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive of The Walt Disney Company said. “She’s a dear friend and colleague as well as someone I deeply admire, and it’s impossible to fully convey her impact and influence on television. She broke barriers, defied convention, made history and set the standard for journalistic excellence for more than 50 years. It’s hard to imagine television without her.”

The sad part is that she is not taking the Sherri Shepard with her.

When The View started, it was a thoughtful, intelligent show. Elizabitch Hasselbeck put an end to that, and now it has stayed drek. The dummer the better. It’s too bad, but I quit watching a long time ago. So, when Baba Wawa leaves, who cares.

Both Barbara and Elisabeth can both go. Very annoying !

  • I will miss her

I have watched the show from the beginning, but not always faithfully. Every time there was a change, there was an adjustment period for me. I liked Elisabeth as a person, but she seemed unhappy toward the end and caused too much tension on the show. I loved Rosie (she was super kind to the audience with great gifts), but she was too depressed and overly sensitive. Sometimes Whoopi was very cranky when she was trying to quit smoking, but at other times, she’s so much fun — and I’ve enjoyed her ever since. Sherry annoyed me when she acted like it was great comedy to gobble up every food in sight, but now she is being a good example and trying to control her diabetes and weight. Sherry also is a great talker and seems much more intelligent than many gave her credit for being in the beginning. Jenny was irritating me some at first, but now I really like and respect her too. She’s a good woman. I love all the ladies, and I applaud Barbara for all her great accomplishments. Sherry is right: All the other shows are somewhat copying The View. You have “The Talk, The Chew, The Taste” — Wow, it’s so obvious! I’m happy for Barbara, as I know she still has plenty to do with her time. Btw, she still looks fabulous!
