Julianne Hough on Joining 'DWTS' Judges' Panel: 'It Just Kind of Made Sense'

Julianne Hough surprises the audience as she enters the Good Morning America studios on Thursday (August 21) in New York City.

The 26-year-old actress/dancer announced that she would be returning to Dancing with the Stars as a permanent judge this fall. Watch her interview below!

Dancing with the Stars has always been a part of my family,” Julianne said. “That’s where it all began for me, so it just kind of made sense.”

When asked whether she would be biased against her brother Derek, she said, “I think that’s a very valid question. It’s going to be how it was when I guest-judged. It’s not necessarily about Derek and the pro dancer, it’s about the collaboration, the team effort, and what they’re doing as a partnership, and really the celebrity can do to improve each week.”

FYI: Julianne is wearing a Olcay Gulsen top and skirt, Stuart Weitzman shoes, Foley + Corinna bag, and Sydney Evan necklace.

She isn’t the nicest judge but I guess she needs to pay the bills since her cash cow Ryan left the picture and she is a bad actress lol.

Can’t sing or act. No current rich man so has to go back to where she started. Glad I don’t watch this show anymore.

  • sillyme

Gee, I guess that acting thing didn’t work out, huh? Or the singing thing.

  • Sk

Maybe it’s just me but in some of the pictures of her leaving GMA she looks pregnant. Could be just the way she’s standing, I guess.

  • Umm

@Sk: She does. She might’ve just ate food or something though. It looks like it’s part bloating + part clingy fabric.

Wow you guys are hard on here. I actually LOVED her acting, one of my favorite movies of all times. I loved her on DWTS and I think she makes a great judge. I will be watching and I’m sure lots of others will too. But I guess everyone has an opinion. Go Julia, you can’t please them all.

I have nothing against Julianne, but I’ll be honest that I haven’t cared to follow her career post DWTS. I use to watch her when she was a partner on the show, and in fact, she was one of my favorites. I wish she was coming back in that capacaity because, despite the fact that she IS a professional dancer and knows what she’s talking about, I feel like she’s not objective when judging the former people she worked with as well as her family (Mark/Derek) based on the two times she was a guest judge. Sometimes her comments felt personal or like they took them personally. I think Carrie-Ann gets personal sometimes too, but she’s in the same position she was since day 1. It’s weird when someone who was on your side comes back to critique your work. I mean, even in the past, she would get called out by the judges if she went against the rules in a dance with her celeb partner. How can someone who has messed up before be able to tell someone else they broke a rule? Like I said, I have nothing against her and I’d like to see her back on DWTS, but not as a judge. That’s just my opinion though.

Dang, I was hoping Maksim Chmerkovskiy would be asked to be a judge this season considering he’s not returning this season as a pro. Maks guest judged a couple seasons ago and did a good job. I think Maks has even professionally judged various competitions around the country.

I am totally baffled by the apparent lack of understanding and/interest that ABC DWTS has in viewership opinion. How could they and still make the decision that hiring Ms. Hough as the fourth judge was what the show needs to even maintain, never mind improve ratings. Without giving specifics, we all know that Season 18 was wildly successful, and everyone knows why. We also know that Ms. Hough has failed at her attempt to make it on the big screen, so the reasons she expresses for return wax more than a little insincere.

The media ask her these questions so that she could defend herself and getting all the comments in social media, she pretty much knows how people feel about her. What I can’t take from her is that she puts on a show. She pretends to be unbiased when is in fact biased. I’d like to believe her, I really do. She’s hard on the contestants? Her qualifications don’t even match half the three judges’ career. Maybe it feels bitter that someone started early and started winning championships and at the age of 20-something considers herself a veteran. If she mentioned that she’s there to represent her generation, I’ll be totally fine. But she critiques people as though she’s been through soooo much (even more than the true pros in the show) and with such ‘hard love’ that she doesn’t come across as constructive, but plain mean and she actually considers herself in the same league as the judges using patronizing statements to her contemporary professional dancers such as “I’ve been where you’ve been…”. Get your ego on the ground dear.
