“It’s a great privilege to be working with Lakeshore on Phillip Roth‘s astounding novel ‘American Pastoral,’” Ewan shared in a statement. “I’ve wanted to direct for years and wanted to wait until I found a story that I ‘had’ to tell, and in this script I knew I had found that story.”

Lakeshore CEO Tom Rosenberg added, “Ewan‘s talent goes far beyond his on-screen work, and we’re excited to be working with a director who is as passionate as we are about telling the story of American Pastoral.”

The last Roth film to be adapted for the big screen, The Human Stain, a great great book, really a masterpiece, was a disaster due to miscasting and a weak script. Anthony Hopkins was all wrong as Coleman Silk and Nicole Kidman was absurd as the white trash girlfriend in the May December romance. Wentworth Miller as young Coleman Silk was suburb. Gary Sinise, a fine actor, was also absurd as Roth’s frequent alter ego Zukerman. That role had to be played by a Jewish actor and Sinise was ridiculous to anyone familiar with Roth’s work and his characters. I hope Ewan McGregor, a wonderful actor, does not make similar casting mistakes. Moreover, one can only hope the script is decent. You have to be great to do Roth well. He is our greatest living American author.
