Angelina Jolie Speaks Out for Sexual Violence Victims in Myanmar

Angelina Jolie is letting her voice be heard to get justice for sexual violence victims in Myanmar.

The 40-year-old actress and U.N. special envoy has been in the conflict-torn region since Wednesday. Nearly 100,000 people have been displaced since a civil war started in 2011.

“This visit underlined the vulnerability of women and girls living in protracted conflict situations to sexual violence, trafficking, and other human rights violations. It was moving and humbling to meet survivors of sexual violence in Kachin State,” Angelina said in a new statement (via AFP).

Despite the worthy efforts of local aid groups, Angelina is pointing out the “urgent need for more medical assistance and legal and psychosocial support” as well as a “strong legal framework to ensure all perpetrators of sexual violence are held accountable.”
