Celebrities Respond to Falcon Heights Shooting of Philando Castile Recorded on Facebook

Less than 24 hours after the senseless shooting of Alton Sterling, a man was shot while being pulled over for an alleged broken taillight on Wednesday night (July 6) in Falcon Heights, Minn.

The victim, Philando Castile, 32, has since died from his gunshot wounds, according to a local CBS affiliate.

His girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, recorded the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook Live as he lay dying in their car.

“Oh my God, please don’t tell me he’s dead,” she says in the graphic video. “Please don’t tell me my boyfriend just went like that.”

Diamond tells the camera that the officer asked to see Philando‘s identification and he told them he had a licensed weapon on him.

He was then reportedly shot four times while reaching for his wallet. Diamond‘s daughter was present. This is still a developing story.

Facebook has since taken the video down.

Celebrities immediately took to Twitter to express their disbelief and outrage.

I was pulled over today for speeding. The cop asked for my license and I reached all the way into the backseat to grab my huge purse that had my wallet. The cop didn’t blink an eye, even turned his back to me. It flashed in my mind that if I was black I’d have been shot by that point. Now tell me more how cops don’t racially profile and the Black Lives Matter movement is racist. SMH.

  • Just Saying

“He was afraid the man would…” “He was just protecting himself from…” “He saw a gun” all that is bullshit. There was a four year old there who saw a police officer, a man who she is being taught in school is suppose to protect her, shoot her father four times as he reached for his ID. Another senseless dead, another hashtag, another killer cop walking away with nothing more than a slap in the hand. I saw the video, the woman had more poise than the over emotional cop that shot the man and was STILL pointing his gun at him. Also, can someone explain why was she arrested?

  • Kyle W

Maybe the cop that pulled you over was just a good cop and you would have been just as safe if you were black? The problem here is that the cop in this incident shouldn’t have been a cop in the first place because he’s unfit for the job.

  • SaraJ

What I want to know is: when this white police officer doesn’t go to jail, what do we do? What’s the plan??

  • Just Saying

Oh, the police officer was Chinese apparently. I bet he’s going to go to jail and they are all going to be like “justice was made”, when in reality they don’t care because he’s also a minority. Only white cops kill people “by mistake” or because “they were protecting themselves”…

  • Bringer of Light

So you’re going to be mad if the officer goes to jail because he’s Chinese?

WHY NO CALL FOR AN AMBULANCE? WHY SUCH EXTREME FORCE & THERE WERE 4 OR 5 COPS OUT THERE? STUPID THATS WHAT! and now he is dead, that video was absolutely HEARTBREAKING to watch-that’s why we as black people really do need to come together & take a good hard look at ourselves BUT on the same token it seems to me he did not deserve to die like that! Im glad she recorded it but it couldn’t have been me! I wouldn’t give a damn what he said-gun or not! I would have kissed and talked to my man while he left the world & remind him of just how much I loved him-smfh

  • Will

The same plan as when all the black officers who have been cleared in the Freddie Gray case are free.

Ugh, I’m so tired of these celebrities who think they have to respond to everything when a victim is black. Who cares what these celebrities think? They act like this could happen to them, but tell me, how many rich black celebs have been killed by cops? None. And, how come they’re only outraged when the victim is black? Unarmed Latinos and whites get killed by cops, too. Whites are more likely to get killed by cops than minorities, but you wouldn’t know that from the media. But, maybe if the media focused more on the fact that there are bad cops than just the race of the victim, something more would be done about it. Once you start turning something into a race issue, people start taking sides and nothing will ever get done.

  • logik69

Yes I can only imagine Diamond Reynolds has seen this kind of thing before, so she’s desensitized because most women would be focused on their dying boyfriend but it was pretty shocking to hear.

  • logik69

You missed the issue, if non white cops get treated differently than white cops that too is not right. So if a black cop shoots another black person, which black life matters?

Just a comment but it must be somewhat hard getting too choked up about the other dude who got killed knowing he is convicted pedophile. I know that is an non issue vis a vis what happened but I would find it hard to get too choked about it.

This guy in this situation sounds like an ordinary guy not some gangbanger etc and I believe his girlfriend’s story so far.

  • Washington One

If you can’t emotionally tolerate a black man reaching for his ID and you pee your pants like a 9 year old girl scout, and you shoot him without ever seeing a gun, it’s time for you to take off the police uniform and get a job where you will not be harmful to human beings and to society.

It’s time for a change in the way we police. I think our president needs to do more to stop this. Don’t get me wrong – I think Obama is doing a great job in office. I mean look at his track record…

RECORD unemployment numbers, legalized gay marriage, 5% growth, best year for jobs since 1999, consumer confidence up, deficit down 60% in 2014, gas prices low, health insurance cheaper than ever ($85/month), car insurance cheaper than ever ($25/month from Insurance Panda), the 1% starting to be taxed more; all while republicans bleated about Benghazi took pointless votes to repeal the ACA… but when it comes to policing and race, I think Obama could be doing more!

I would like for Obama to stop trying to please Iran and Wall Street and start thinking more about civil rights. His own people are being gunned down in the street and it’s been going on for way too long.

It’s way past time for a change in law enforcement.

Did the officers have body cameras to see what lead up to the shooting? Just curious.

Also, these “celebrity respond” post are useless. Unless, it’s someone in a official position to do something, have a true political stance, said something out of line, or it directly impacted their community we the people don’t care about their opinions.

Cops who kill white people almost always have repercussions. The cops in all of these highly publicized cases (Freddie Gray, Eric Garner, Mike Brown, etc.) haven’t faced any consequences. Some were even given paid leave. Yes, white people get killed by cops but they get justice.

  • Mike1288

Exactly! Maybe race plays a part but telling from the officers voice he sounds more unprepared, incompetent and should never have been a cop. Regardless the police need to get it together and vet people better before giving people guns.

  • Mike1288

Obama isnt running for office no need to read his resume but youre right he needs to do more.

  • Mike1288

Then you clearly dont read up on your statistics if that is what you believe.

  • Mike1288

Not only that but they really dont do anything past their very generous tweet. They need to get over themselves.

There are many cops out here that act perfectly calm and rational towards white people, thus giving the illusion that they are a “good cop.” Bias against black people is an example of something that makes someone an unfit cop. The academy should have some sort of a test to measure a cops racial biases.

  • Gina

How much you wanna bet that even with video footage, the cop is gonna suffer very little consequences?

  • Gina

Your statement is akin to walking into someone’s funeral and yelling “other people are dead too!” Inappropriate.

  • Giovanna Daniels

The problem that we have in this country, is that privilege is real. There are many Asian -Americans that benefit from privilege. Asians here are most definitely still a minority, and they as a community have very real struggles with the American hierarchy as well….however, that does not mean that they aren’t capable of harboring much of the same behavior as their white counterparts. There are a lot of Asians out there that still don’t like black people. And a lot of that is a result of media and influence. If you recall the Rodney Kimg Riots…when a Korean convenience store owner shot and killed a teenage black girl. We are all minorities in the eyes of the oppressor…but privilege trickles down, whether we see it or not.

There are black people out there who have been hard wired to believe that they are better than their impoverished,”Ebonic-speaking” counterparts. They choose to stand apart from any constructs of what it means to be black in America. Instead opting for inclusion in white communities, and polarization of their “blackness.” It’s a problem, because these types of black people are no better…

What needs to be understood, is that whether the cop was white, black, Asian, or Latino….they have grown accustomed to having privilege. And due to that, much of their behavior is mirrored directly from oppressive white culture.

  • Jess

It’s not. But there are people who claim that it is.

  • Jess

Considering I wasn’t actually speeding (the cop didn’t have a radar gun, was just randomly waving people over) I can’t vouch for his “goodness.” Yes, there are good cops out there but there are many, many more that are corrupt because they have too much power and are not held accountable for their actions. “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

I feel the same way. A few months back, I was on the fence about Black Lives Matter but the video of Philando Castile bleeding to death in the front seat of his car has changed my mind forever.

    #BlackLivesMatter

  • Eye Offend

You are wrong. In no way does it mean one life is better than another and it is not separatist. There are many white people now participating as allies.
