Jessica Chastain Is Pushing for Gender Equality in Hollywood

Jessica Chastain is making sure her voice is being heard in Hollywood as she pushed for gender equality.

The 40-year-old The Zookeeper’s Wife actress spoke with Variety to share her views on equal pay between female and male actors.

“I’m not taking jobs anymore where I’m getting paid a quarter of what the male co-star is being paid,” Jessica said. I’m not allowing that in my life.”

Over her career, Jessica has become an outspoken advocate for gender equality and has pushed for more female directors and crew along with seeking better representation of female characters on screen.

“There was something huge that I recently turned down,” Jessica said. “For me, it wasn’t about the money; it was an old-fashioned problem of the wage gap. I turned it down, and they didn’t come back. I remember afterwards I was like, ‘What did I do? Maybe it was a mistake.’ But it wasn’t, because everyone in the studio system heard what I did. So what you’re doing is creating a reputation: Don’t bring Jessica something where she’s not being fairly compensated compared to the male actor. Even though I lost that film, I’ve created a boundary. I drew a line in the sand.”

Yeah, they’re saying “Don’t bring Jessica something” and then that’s it.

Well she will find out the hard way what this attitude does for actors who can’t open movies anyways. I can’t think of a single film where she headlined that was a box office hit. That doesn’t help you negotiate pay so I don’t see how she is going to plead her case.

Zero Dark Thirty was a huge hit critically and at the box office

You need more than 1 movie to demand anything. Look a thing Passengers. Lawerence got a bigger payday than Pratt because she hasn’t multiple hit movies under her belt although that movie hurt her a bit. Pratt had Guardians and jurassic world. Jessica Chastain has hadn’t a string of flops since one good role. Also, it depends on which she stars with. I fully expect someone like Clooney to make more, he has had decades of commercial success and critical success. She can’t expect to always make equal. That’s not the way it works in any industry.

And her movie ‘Mama’ came out around the same time & was #1.

    shut up.

it has been proven over and over and over that for a very very few actresses the rest are paid much less even when they are just as successful and proven themselves over and beyond they STILL get paid less ONLY because they are female!!!

  • Cooper

Oh shut up you immature naive no nothing. We are not talking about OTHER actresses we are talking about THIS actress. She is a perfectly talented actress but I don’t hear anyone saying they are going to see a movie for her. This is business not a charity and she doesn’t doesn’t have the brand name recognition. Now if we are talking about NIcole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep or any other be veteran who has had way more success commercially and in awards that’s a whole other story. They ARE NOT paid there fair share. Chastain is still a relative new comer. Those rules don’t just apply to her but men. Chris Pratt is another example. He had 2 HUGE movies before demanding anything but he still made way less than Jlaw (which I agree with), she has proven herself and is more valuable. By your rules they should all be the same, or is it just when it comes to woman cause that she not equality either numbnut. You keep thinking about people collectively and that just isn’t how the world works. Each situation is different and each person is

She is delusional. They don’t get paid by gender but by box office. There is women in Hollywood whose movies make as much as any guy’s movies and they get the big bucks. Women like Scarlett Johansson. Jessica Chastain is just not one of them.

  • Maria M.

Her logic is that if she stars with Robert Downey Jr, she should be paid as much as he is!? Is she insane? She expects to get 50 millions because her male costar is getting 50 millions!? She demands equality with the biggest star in Holywood who made like 10 billions at the box office so far because sexes are equal before the law!? Sexes may be equal before the state but they are not equal professionally. Her star power is not equal to some other people in HW. It’s like saying that guy that came 10th at Olympics should make as much as Usain Bolt because people are created equal!? WTF! Have these feminist idiots ever heard about meritocracy? By demanding equal pay to those who contribute more to the society they are outright rejecting capitalism. She has every right to ask for the same pay as the male actor in her league, but she is asking equality with all male costars.
