“I originally wanted to go with a more fantasy abstract theme,” Asher told JJ of the video, which was shot in Bosnia by director Danis Tanovic. “Once I had the pleasure of teaming up with Danis Tanovic, who won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, I was very interested in the concept he had in mind when he had first heard the song. We both collectively came together and went with a more literal theme in terms of ‘dirty little secret.’”

Asher added, “Filming in Bosnia was an amazing experience that came about all thanks to Diana Jenkins, the mastermind entrepreneur and record label head who’s propelled my solo career on every front. For the video shoot, so many different, wonderful locations were used. We had enough material at the end of the day that we could have made at least five music videos. Danis pulled in his top-notch team. The overall feel and energy on set was simply magic. Danis and I worked extremely well together and we are both super proud of the final product.”

JustJared.com Interview – Asher Monroe

JJ: What can you tell us about the meaning behind the song “Hush Hush” and why you chose that as the single?

AM: Well to be honest, I was going back and forth with two different titles. One was “Dirty Little Secret” and one was “Hush Hush.” I really didn’t know which one I liked better. My friend Ryan Tedder gave me advice that maybe go with “Hush Hush” because there was already a song called “Dirty Little Secret” by The All-American Rejects. I chose it as a follow-up single because I wrote and produced it alongside Alon Levitan. I had an amazing video already shot. I felt it was time to release it to my fans. I had made them wait long enough.

JJ: What is it like working with Chris Brown and being in the studio with him?

AM: Chris Brown is an amazingly talented singer/performer. I always wanted to work with him. I liked that we were both from Virginia and that we were both around the same age. You never know what you’ll get from Chris in the studio whether its a song, lyric, beat, impromptu dance, joke. He’s got a great energy and I definitely think we captured that working together in the studio.

JJ: Did he give you any advice about your upcoming debut album and/or did you learn anything from him about being in the industry in general?

AM: Chris has great work ethic. I learned a lot just by being around him in the studio. He doesn’t let much get to him. He takes out most of his feelings or emotions in his music. I know he’s a big fan of my album. I always hear he’s playing it for this famous person or that famous person. I think he is very proud of the work we did in the studio.

JJ: “Hush Hush” already has a very different vibe than some of your other songs. What can you tell us about the album and what kind of sound it will have?

AM: Wow. That’s a hard question. My sound is constantly progressing and maturing. It’s hard with all the songs that I have written over the years to compile them all into one album. It’s almost impossible to categorize them into one genre. I have been in the music industry ever since I was six years old. I have been inspired by so many great artists and of course trying to be original at the same time. I try not to work under boundaries while I’m making music. My album has a little pop, r&b, dance, reggae. It features Chris Brown, Sean Kingston, Ryan Tedder, and of course a few more surprise guests. I’ve worked really hard on this album and I think the world is ready to hear what I’m made of.

JJ: It seems like a long time coming for you! What can you tell us about the whole recording experience and getting to work with such talented people?

AM: I have come a long way. I don’t think a lot of people realize how long I’ve been doing this. I have paid my dues and I’m continuing to build my craft, and learn and grow as much, and as fast as I can. I can honestly say that I’m blessed and honored to have worked and continue to work with such talented, amazing people. I have always considered myself a fast learner. I try to retain and absorb as much information and knowledge about the business as I can. I don’t want to just sit back and have other people do the hard work for me. I try to be involved in every process of my career as possible. I run my own social media, record, and try to vocal produce myself as much as possible, write my own songs, style myself, and learn the business side. If I didn’t do acting or music, I was going to school for business. God has put me on this path and I can honestly say I wake up every day doing what I love.
