Amal Clooney Slams Conviction of Al-Jazeera Journalists

Amal Alamuddin Clooney is speaking out about the conviction of three Al-Jazeera journalists in Egypt and says that it sends a “dangerous message.”

The 37-year-old human rights lawyer and wife of actor George Clooney represented Canadian Mohammed Fahmy, who was sentenced to prison for not being registered with Egypt’s journalist syndicate while covering the military ousting of Islamic president Mohammed Morsi back in 2013.

“The verdict today sends a very dangerous message in Egypt,” Amal said in a statement after the ruling. “It sends a message that journalists can be locked up for simply doing their job, for telling the truth and reporting the news.”

“And it sends a dangerous message that there are judges in Egypt who will allow their courts to become instruments of political repression and propaganda,” she added.
