Tobey Maguire's 'Spider-Man' Co-Star Elizabeth Banks Was Told She Was 'Too Old' for Mary Jane
Tobey Maguire beats the summer heat by stepping out to grab coffee on Wednesday (June 22) in New York City.
In a recent interview with GlamourUK, Elizabeth Banks revealed that she auditioned for the role of Mary Jane in the original Spider-Man franchise, where Tobey played the superhero.
“I was told I was too old to play her,” Elizabeth told the magazine, according to Vanity Fair. “Tobey and I are basically the same age (at the time, she was 28 while Tobey was 27). I was like, ‘Oh, okay, that’s what I’ve signed up for.”
The role ultimately ended up going to a then 18-year-old Kirsten Dunst.
Despite not landing the original role she auditioned for, Elizabeth revealed that her “consolation prize” for being too old was receiving the role of newspaper secretary Betty Brant in the film.
