'This Is Us' Finale Spoilers: Creator Talks About THAT Cliffhanger

The season three finale of This Is Us just aired and the episode ended with a shocking moment that is going to be a major cliffhanger for the next several months.

This post contains spoilers, so make sure to click away now if you don’t want to know what happened!

In the final moments of the episode, we saw a flash forward to the future and found out that Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) are still married, Kevin (Justin Hartley) is now a dad though we don’t know who the mother is, and there’s a chance that Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) are no longer together.

Randall and the family are at a house and he says “I’m going to go say hi” and he walks to his mom Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) room. We see that she is sick and likely suffering from dementia as she can’t place who Randall is.

The shocking moment is when we see Jack’s brother Nick (Griffin Dunne) sitting next to Rebecca’s bed and acting as her caregiver, not her husband Miguel (Jon Huertas).

So, what happened to Miguel? Here is what series creator Dan Fogelman had to say…

“I think teases everything. It obviously gives a lot of answers and things we have focused on this season whether it be [Rebecca] or Kevin and Zoe or Randall and Beth. There are also some things looming that propulsively drive us forward,” Dan said in an interview with Deadline.

He added, “Like I have always said about this show — if you were to pop in during a moment of time with your family — 15 to 20 years in the past or 15 to 20 years in the future — you would be surprised who enter and leave the picture and where life takes you. You’re flying through time in that way and that’s what we have in the last couple minutes in the finale. You’re surprised at the things you’re discovering in the ‘family photo.’”

Executive producer Isaac Aptaker told TV Line, “What happened to Miguel and where he is in the future is a bit of a longer-term mystery for the show. But we’re going to be getting back into the Nicky story pretty quickly [in Season 4]. We love Griffin Dunne so much… and we just loved his dynamic with Justin, Mandy and the rest of the family. So we are going to be exploring how Nicky goes from the man who said, ‘I can’t have you in my life right now. Please just leave me [alone] in [my] trailer out in the middle of nowhere’ into this person who is obviously connected enough to the family in the future to have this very special place by Rebecca’s bedside. So that is going to be more immediate for us. And the Miguel [mystery] is more bigger picture.”
