Serena Williams Is Hard on Herself After US Open Loss, Calls Finals the 'Worst Match'

Serena Williams is being critical of her US Open Women’s Finals loss on Saturday (September 7) in Queens, New York.

“I love [19-year-old winner of US Open Bianca Andreescu], I think she’s a great girl, but I think this is the worst match I’ve played all tournament. And it’s hard to know that you could do better,” Serena said in a press conference after the match. “It’s inexcusable for me to play at that level.”

She added that she’s having a hard time telling herself “‘you did okay’ because I don’t [think] I did.”

“I could have just been more Serena today. I honestly don’t think Serena showed up and I have to figure out how to get her to show up,” Serena added.

Serena Williams has had a wildly successful tennis career and she’s won 23 Grand Slam titles throughout her career. She has not won a Grand Slam (one of the four most important annual tennis events per year) since the Australian Open in 2017, when she was pregnant with her daughter Alexis Olympia.

After her Wimbledon loss in July, Serena was asked if she should stop focusing on social justice to focus on her tennis career and she had the perfect mic drop moment.
