Jharrel Jerome Wins First Emmy for Best Actor in 'When They See Us' (Video)
Jharrel Jerome accepts his very first Emmy award!
The 21-year-old When They See Us actor took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his role as Korey Wise on the Netflix series at the 2019 Emmy Awards on Sunday (September 22) at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
He beat out Mahershala Ali (True Detective), Benicio Del Toro (Escape at Dannemora), Hugh Grant (A Very English Scandal), Jared Harris (Chernobyl), and Sam Rockwell (Fosse/Verdon).
“I feel like I should just be in the Bronx right now, chillin,’ waiting for my mom’s cooking but I’m here,” Jharrel said during his speech.
He also gave a shout-out to his fellow nominees, his family, When They See Us director Ava DuVernay, and the Exonerated Five, who gave him a standing ovation.
