Johnny Depp's Libel Trial Against 'The Sun' Moving Forward

The 57-year-old actor’s trial, in which he is suing The Sun for an article alleging he was a “wife beater,” is still moving forward, Variety reported Thursday (July 2).

The article in question referenced allegations made by ex Amber Heard that he was violent, which he denies.

Adam Wolanski, the attorney for publisher News Group Newspapers, asked the judge to throw out the case, arguing the actor had breached a court order by not providing text messages relating to his alleged drug use.

“I am not persuaded that the trial of the claim would be unfair,” Judge Andrew Nicol declared, saying his decision to allow the case to proceed was dependent on Johnny undertaking that he would not seek to prosecute Amber for allegedly breaching a court order made during the U.S. case, by providing The Sun’s legal team with evidence.

The trial is set to start on Tuesday, with Johnny, Amber and Johnny’s former partners Vanessa Paradis and Winona Ryder expected to give evidence.

Amber Heard‘s attorneys recently revealed why they are stepping away from Johnny‘s defamation case against her.
