Darren Aronofsky Says He Gets 'the Best Hate Mail Ever' Because of His 2017 Film 'Mother!'

Darren Aronofsky‘s mother! was one of the more polarizing films in the last few years and the director says he still receives hate mail about it!

The movie stars Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem as a husband and wife whose secluded farmhouse is overrun and destroyed by houseguests, an allegorical representation of the violence with which people treat Mother Earth.

During an appearance at Egypt’s El Gouna Film Festival on Sunday (October 17), the director fielded questions about the movie and shared his thoughts on the controversy surrounding the film.

“We were nervous about how controversial it was going to be, but then when you release a movie to the world, and there’s so many angry people, you start to wonder, ‘Hold on, what did I do?,’” Darren said, per Variety. “I get some of the best hate mail ever, which is great.”

He went on to say that someone had gotten a hold of his phone number and sent him a text saying they were going to deliberately consume coal and cause as much environmental destruction as possible just to spite him.

“But also out of that, the type of excitement and passion you get from other people that really connect with the film reminds you why you’re doing it,” he said.

Last year, Darren revealed that he had originally planned on making a Batman movie with an actor who went on to have an entirely different role in the DC universe!
