Sidney Poitier Dead - Legendary Actor Dies at 94
Sidney Poitier has died.
The acclaimed actor, who became the first Black man to win Best Actor at the Oscars, passed away at the age of 94, Minister of Foreign Affairs Fred Mitchell confirmed Friday (January 7), via The Independent.

Sidney was known for films like Blackboard Jungle, The Defiant Ones, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, as well as In the Heat of the Night and his Oscar-winning turn in Lillies of the Field.
Denzel Washington praised Sidney when he became the second Black man to win Best Actor in 2001: “I’ll always be chasing you, Sidney. I’ll always be following in your footsteps. There’s nothing I would rather do, sir.”
Later in the ’80s, he would direct the Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder-helmed Stir Crazy.
