New Video Suggests DaBaby May Not Have Acted in Self-Defense During 2018 Shooting (Report)

Rolling Stone has published a new video of DaBaby‘s 2018 shooting, with the outlet writing that the footage may call into question his involvement in the fatal incident.

The 30-year-old rapper shot and killed Jaylin Craig in the parking lot of a Walmart and later claimed he was acting in self-defense. Charges against him were dropped in 2019 when a key witness did not appear in court.

In the clip, DaBaby is seen charging at Jaylin and his friend, Henry Douglas, and tackling the teenager before hitting him. It appears as though Jaylin my have pulled out a gun before putting it away.

DaBaby can also been seen pulling out his weapon and firing it multiple times, injuring Jaylin. Jaylin was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived at the scene.

While DaBaby never faced charges of killing Jaylin, he was convicted of carrying a concealed weapon. He received 12 months of probation as well as a suspended jail sentence.

In a video posted to social media in 2018, the rapper claimed that he had been confronted by individuals who could have harmed him, his daughter and his son.

“Daughter could have got hit, son could have got hit [and] me,” he said in the clip. “F–kin’ lawyers telling me not to say something and shit, fuck all that. Two n—– walk down on you and your whole motherf–king family, threaten y’all, whip out on y’all, n—-, let me see what y’all gon’ do.”

Rolling Stone spoke with defense lawyer and former North Carolina district court judge Todd Owens, who said that the video could cast doubt on DaBaby‘s claims.

“Going up and pushing a person who is brandishing a firearm, or who she can see has a firearm is really, really risky business,” he said. “That completely undermines that legal theory.”

However, legal analyst Emily Baker also told the outlet that witnesses claimed to have seen Jaylin with the gun, even though the video makes it seem as though DaBaby started the fight.

“But it’s not clear-cut, and it is not a ‘These people rolled up on me and tried to roll me, and I had to defend myself,’” she explained. “That’s not what this video shows. This video shows a fight that got way out of hand very fast, and that resulted in somebody dying.”

In a statement to Rolling Stone from a representative of the district attorney’s office, they confirmed that they had reviewed the police footage and would not charge DaBaby further.

DaBaby was involved in another shooting earlier this month.
