'Sweet Home Alabama' Director Reveals Charlize Theron Was Almost The Star Of The Movie

Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon

Andy revealed that the project was originally developed as a movie for Charlize.

“Charlize and her production company were the original principals behind the project,” he said. “They were developing it for Charlize to star. When I did the rewrite with Rick Parks, I don’t think she was a fan and so everybody parted ways.”

Andy then opened up about getting Reese involved in the flick, which happened after she filmed Legally Blonde.

“I knew Reese because I had done a TV movie with her when she was 15. So we kept in touch. We would have lunch every year or so. I had lunch with her not that long before I turned in the Sweet Home Alabama script,” he recalled. “We were just catching up and I asked, ‘What have you been up to?’ And she said, ‘I made this movie nobody is going to see. It’s silly but it was really fun to make.’”

Andy went on, saying that he told her about the Sweet Home Alabama script, and admitted he didn’t know if it was ever going to get made.

Legally Blonde came out, and I got a call from the studio and they were like, ‘What do you think of Reese Witherspoon?’ And I was like, ‘I’ve known her since she was 15. She would be great.’” he said, adding that Reese then called him up: “‘You are never going to believe this, they sent me your script!’”

Andy admits that the only reason Sweet Home Alabama was made was because of Legally Blonde.

Just last year, there were rumors about a sequel to the movie happening.
