Angela Lansbury Dies at 96

The great Dame Angela Lansbury, known as a Broadway icon and the star of the long running series Murder She Wrote, has passed away.

The news was confirmed by her family, who released a statement that read, “The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce that their mother died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1:30 AM today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022, just five days shy of her 97th birthday. In addition to her three children, Anthony, Deirdre and David, she is survived by three grandchildren, Peter, Katherine and Ian, plus five great grandchildren and her brother, producer Edgar Lansbury. She was proceeded in death by her husband of 53 years, Peter Shaw. A private family ceremony will be held at a date to be determined.”

She was known as a Broadway star, winning a Tony Award for her work in Sweeney Todd as the baker Nellie Lovett. She also won Tony Awards for her work in Gypsy, Mame, and Dear World, among others.

She was also known for her work on the long running TV series Murder She Wrote. She also voiced Mrs. Potts in the original Beauty & the Beast.

In all, she received an Honorary Academy Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BAFTA, a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award and five additional Tony Awards, six Golden Globes, and an Olivier Award.
