'She Said' Writer Explains [SPOILER]'s Cameo in the Movie & Why She Didn't Appear On-Screen

The new movie She Said is now playing in theaters and it features a cameo from an Oscar-winning actress who appears in the film as herself.

Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan star as New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, who together broke one of the most important stories in a generation— a story that helped propel the #Metoo movement, shattered decades of silence around the subject of sexual assault in Hollywood and altered American culture forever.

The story is inspired by the events to uncover the crimes of the now convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein. Weinstein was eventually sentenced to 23 years in prison on charges of sexual assault and third-degree rape. His survivors were eventually awarded $19 million in a settlement.

Gwyneth Paltrow appears as herself in the movie, though she only has an off-screen role with her voice heard during a phone call.

If you didn’t know, Gwyneth won her Oscar for her performance in Weinstein‘s movie Shakespeare in Love and she accused him of sexual harassment as part of The New York Times‘ investigation.

Screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz has explained why they decided to keep Gwyneth off-screen.

“We all felt it would be best to have Gwyneth on the phone, rather than on the screen,” she told Variety. “There was never a draft with her on-screen. Emotionally, we felt it would be very effective.”
