Former UK Police Official Confirms There Were Real Threats to Meghan Markle's Life During Her Time in England

Neil Basu, who is stepping down as the Assistant Commissioner of Specialist Operations at Scotland Yard, is speaking out about the “very real” threats the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (Prince Harry and Meghan Markle) received during their time living in the UK while they were still senior working members of the royal family.

During a new interview with British news outlet Channel 4, he was asked about the threats they received.

“I’ve talked publicly for many years about the threat of extreme right-wing terrorism in this country,” Basu responded. “When I started in counter-terrorism in 2015, it was about 6 percent of our total workload. When I left 15, 16 months ago, it was over 20 percent of our workload.”

About the threats they received, he continued, “If you’d seen the stuff that was written and you were receiving it, the kind of rhetoric that’s online … you would feel under threat all of the time.”

He then revealed if he believed there were real threats made against the Duchess’ life, to which he responded, “Absolutely. We had teams investigating it. People have been prosecuted for those threats.”
