After picking up the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the 2023 Critics Choice Awards, the 66-year-old actress delivered an encouraging speech on stage.

Looking back on her perseverance, Sheryl credited the late Sidney Poitier for helping her believe in herself and Quinta Brunson for giving her a chance on TV in Abbott Elementary.

Then, she shared her message for new actors breaking into the industry.

“To all of you watching, come close to the screen and listen. People don’t have to like you, people don’t have to love you, people don’t even have to respect you. But when you look in the mirror, you better love what you see!” she concluded.

Abbott Elementary also won Best Comedy Series at the ceremony.
