'Beef' Stars Steven Yeun & Ali Wong Break Silence on Co-Star David Choe Rape Scandal

The stars and creator of Beef are responding to the resurfaced criticism against cast member David Choe.

Following the release of the new Netflix series, David, 47, came under fire after an interview he gave back in 2014 resurfaced where he joked about being a “successful rapist” during a massage.

On Friday (April 21), Beef stars and executive producers Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, along with show creator Lee Sung Jin, released a statement calling David‘s comments “undeniably hurtful and extremely disturbing,” but said that he’s “put in the work to get the mental health support he needed.”

“The story David Choe fabricated nine years ago is undeniably hurtful and extremely disturbing. We do not condone this story in any way, and we understand why this has been so upsetting and triggering,” the trio shared in a statement with Variety.

They continued, “We’re aware David has apologized in the past for making up this horrific story, and we’ve seen him put in the work to get the mental health support he needed over the last decade to better himself and learn from his mistakes.”

David first issued an apology for his comments shortly after the podcast interview was published back in 2014.

He released a second apology in 2017, writing on Instagram, “I have zero history of sexual assault. I am deeply sorry for any hurt I’ve brought to anyone through my past words.”

At the time, David also said that he went through three years of recovery of rehabilitation.
