Blu-ray and Digital HD Releases
The BFG – Roald Dahl‘s beloved classic comes to life in this Steven Spielberg directed rendition, out on Blu-Ray and Digital HD today.
The film follows a young girl named Sophie who lives in a world where giants lurk in the shadow of the streets of London. Sophie befriends an affable dream collecting giant she names The BFG. From there Sophie is introduced to the world of giants in Giant Country and finds that her presence there requires her to warn London that not only do giants exist, but that the unfriendly giants are coming.
When the film was first announced, it seemed like there was no way it could fail. Steven Spielberg directing, John Williams scoring, backed by Disney, etc… however, the film opened to mixed reviews at best and left many wondering what had happened. Watching the film again, I think its important to clear your mind and saying that this film is not like any other children’s film. Sure there’s the usual slapstick humor and wonderful CGI, however, the film is a lot more complex in that there are many thematic elements that the film touches upon. The expectation may be an action-packed adventure, however, we’re met really with the friendship between a little girl and a simple-minded yet complex giant. Themes such as loneliness, the shortness of life, and bullying are all touched upon here. Stepping back, one can see the intent behind the film and its possible to appreciate that this is different.
As for the home release, once again, we can expect a superb 1080p picture with DTS-HD audio. The scenes from Giant Country really shine and the details look amazing. Various featurettes are included in this film including a making of video, a short about the friendship between Sophie and the giant, and a Giants 101 bit where you meet the giants.
