Sam Raimi Tapped To Direct 'Doctor Strange 2'

Sam Raimi might be stepping behind the camera for the much anticipated sequel to Doctor Strange.

Variety reports that the Spider-Man director would replace Scott Derrickson, who departed the role due to creative differences. He’ll remain as an executive producer, though.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor are all expected to return for the second film, but Rachel McAdams will not.

Elizabeth Olsen will join the movie in her role as Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has said before that Scarlet Witch’s appearance in the movie will link with the Disney+ series, WandaVision, set for release in December.

'Doctor Strange' Sequel Loses Director Scott Derrickson Over 'Creative Differences'

Marvel is parting ways with director Scott Derrickson, who was slated to helm the upcoming movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Scott directed the first Doctor Strange movie, which opened in theaters in 2016 to both critical and commercial success. The film grossed nearly $680 million around the world and star Benedict Cumberbatch reprised the role in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

“Marvel Studios and Scott Derrickson have amicably parted ways on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences. We remain grateful to Scott for his contributions to the MCU,” Marvel said in a statement to Variety.

The movie will begin production in May and Marvel does not expect for the production schedule to be delayed due to the change in directors. The studio is currently searching for a replacement and Scott will remain on the project as an executive producer.

Tilda Swinton Releases Emails with Margaret Cho About Whitewashing of 'Doctor Strange'

When Tilda Swinton was involved in a whitewashing controversy over her character The Ancient One in Doctor Strange, the Oscar-winning actress confided in Margaret Cho over email to try and understand the public’s perception. Now, their email conversation has been published online with her permission.

Tilda released the emails after Margaret said in a podcast that they got into “kind of a fight about why the part should not have gone to her.”

“Basically, it ended with her saying, ‘Well, I’m producing a movie with Steven Yeun starring,” Margaret said on the TigerBelly podcast.

Tilda‘s rep sent the full exchange to Jezebel with the following statement: “Since you asked for a response to a story you published today about the substance and tone of a correspondence between Margaret Cho and Tilda Swinton, Tilda offers you the entire unedited and only conversation she has ever had with Margaret – with her gratitude for the opportunity to clarify and with all good wishes to all.”

Margaret spoke out about the release of the emails. “Asian actors should play Asian roles,” she told EW. “I believe my emails stand on their own and should be taken for the spirit in which they were intended. I am grateful that the debate has now entered the national discussion and remain a huge fan of Tilda‘s.”
