Fantasia Barrino Taylor is opening up about her resilience.
The 39-year-old American Idol winner and The Color Purple star got candid in a cover story for Elle‘s 2023 Women in Hollywood issue, out now.
During the conversation, she spoke about angels coming into her life during dark times and feeling lost, losing it all and attempting suicide, and how she feels she’s getting her second chance at fame.

Fantasia Barrino, Billie Eilish, Lily Gladstone, and Carey Mulligan were all honored at the event. Emily Blunt was honored with the Power of Women Alumni Award and the Producer of the Year Award went to Margot and her LuckyChap partners Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara.
The evening ended with a special surprise performance of Billie‘s ‘What Was I Made For’ performed alongside her brother Finneas.
Surprise presenters included Leonardo DiCaprio and Oprah Winfrey. Guests enjoyed exclusive Casamigos cocktails including a Spicy Margarita and a Paloma.

The 39-year-old The Color Purple star woke up in a hospital in August 2010 after overdosing following a series of events that led to her wanting “the noise to stop.”
She was supporting her family financially, was getting sued by her father for how he was portrayed in her memoir and her house was in foreclosure, and it became a lot to be dealing with.
However, when she was in the hospital, she had a guiding light in the form of a nurse, who helped her to realize she never wanted to be in that position again.

The Color Purple, based on the classic novel by Alice Walker and the beloved Steven Spielberg movie, is a decades-spanning tale of one woman’s journey to independence. Celie faces many hardships in her life, but ultimately finds extraordinary strength and hope in the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood.
The musical version of The Color Purple has already had two Broadway productions and now it has been turned into a movie with Oprah Winfrey as one of the producers.
Starring in the film alongside Taraji are American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino in her major motion picture debut, as well as Tony Award nominee Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, and Aunjanue Ellis.
The Color Purple, directed by Blitz Bazawule, will hit theaters on December 25.
