Ian McKellen Reveals Why He Turned Down Dumbledore Role in 'Harry Potter' Films

Ian McKellen was once offered a chance at the role of Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films after the original actor chosen for the role, Richard Harris, passed away after making the first two movies in the franchise.

“When they called me up and said would I be interested in being in the Harry Potter films, they didn’t say in what part,” Ian said during an appearance on the BBC. “I worked out what they were thinking, and I couldn’t… I couldn’t take over the part from an actor who I’d known didn’t approve of me.”

Richard apparently called Ian‘s acting, “technically brilliant but passionless,” in the past.

Ian McKellen's Women's March Sign Featured Patrick Stewart as Star Trek’s Captain Picard

Ian McKellen held a sign at the 2017 Women’s March that was too perfect.

The 77-year-old Lord of the Rings actor rallied at the march on Saturday (January 21) in London, England.

His sign featured Star Trek‘s Captain Picard – aka his BFF Patrick Stewart – holding his face in his palm.

The duo’s sweet, hilarious friendship is well-documented.

Ian also shared an inspiring message about his experience at the march, referring to President Donald Trump as “President Breaking Wind.”

Ian McKellen Turned Down $1.5 Million Offer to Marry Couple Dressed as Gandalf

Ian McKellen has revealed that he was offered $1.5 million to dress up as Gandalf and marry a “very famous couple,” but he turned it down.

“I was offered one-and-a-half million dollars to marry a very famous couple in California, which I would perhaps have considered doing but I had to go dressed as Gandalf,” the legendary actor told the Daily Mail. “So I said, ‘I am sorry, Gandalf doesn’t do weddings.’”

The celeb couple was reportedly Facebook co-founder Sean Parker and his wife Alexandra Lenas. They got married back in 2013 with a Lord of the Rings themed wedding and all of the guests were given custom clothes to fit the theme.

Ian McKellan Responds to Sam Smith's Oscars Speech

Ian McKellen has responded to Sam Smith‘s shout-out during his acceptance speech at the 2016 Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday (February 28) in Hollywood.

The 23-year-old singer won the award for Best Original Song and said that Ian once mentioned that no openly gay man has won an Oscar before and he’s proud to be the first.

This statement is untrue as Dustin Lance Black won an Oscar back in 2009 for writing the movie Milk and he called the singer out for the mistake.

“I’d said no openly gay actor had received #Oscars – that doesn’t detract from @samsmithworld achievement. Congratulations to him & all others!” Ian said to clarify that he was only speaking of actors.
