A Mini Shark Week Is Coming This Weekend!

Shark Week fans are going to love this news! We’re gonna get some shark content this weekend!

“Shark Week in a Weekend” will kick off on Saturday, April 4 at 9 a.m. EST and go until Sunday night.

Shark Week normally airs on the Discovery Channel in July, but due to the social distancing happening across the country right now, the network decided to put together a jam-packed weekend of shark content.

One of the funnest Shark Week moments to date was when Michael Phelps raced a shark to see who was faster! Find out who won.

Did Michael Phelps Or Great White Win Shark Week Race?

After weeks of anticipation, Michael Phelps faced off with a Great White Shark in Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs. Great White!

In the special that aired during Shark Week on the Discovery Channel on Sunday (July 23), the 32-year-old Olympic gold-medalist tested his racing ability against a number of different shark breeds.

However, all of the sharks were virtual version and Michael did not actually swim side-by-side with any sharks, but raced CGI version of sharks based on their swim rates in separate races.

In the first 50-meter race against the reef shark, Michael won with a time 18.7 seconds. When his time was compared to the hammerhead shark, Michael was defeated as the shark finished the race in 15.1 seconds.

For the main event against the Great White Shark, Michael was defeated once again by only two seconds.

Michael Phelps to Race Great White Shark: 'I Got In & Did My Best'

As you may know, Michael Phelps, one of the most celebrated swimmers of all time, will be racing a Great White Shark for Shark Week in a special titled, Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs. Great White.

“I was like, ‘Yeah, sure, why not? Let’s see who would win a race.’ It’s hard for me to race something that has the speed that they have, and how fast they can turn on a dime is something that’s truly incredible, especially with the size of these animals. I got in and did my best, and you guys are going to have to see what the outcome is. But I think it’s just interesting more for me to learn and to teach people about what sharks can do, and learn what to do and what not to do around sharks,” Michael told EW. “The only thing I can say is we weren’t in a pool. We were in open water. We were very safe. We had about 15 safety divers around. For me, the biggest thing was just trying to stay warm; that was something that was extremely challenging, just because the water is 55 degrees. It’s something that a shark can survive in, and a human really can’t survive in water like that.”

The race will air on July 23, 8 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery!
