Mike Comrie: Pittsburgh Penguins' Newest Hire!

Mike Comrie: Pittsburgh Penguins' Newest Hire!

Hilary Duff will be soon be making the trek to Pennsylvania a lot more often!

Her husband, pro hockey player Mike Comrie, signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins worth $500,000 (substantially less than the $1.25 million he earned last season with the Edmonton Oilers).

Why? Mike‘s agent Ritch Winter says that his client agreed to sign because he believed it would help the team. What a good guy!

“I think the biggest thing for me is that I’m excited to join a team that has some great players. Hopefully I can come in and complement them and be a guy that can help score and create some depth,” Mike shared. “I’m excited. it was definitely a hockey decision. There’s times in your career where you make a decision — I wanted to go to a great team and be a part of an organization like Pittsburgh and be able to compete for a Stanley Cup.”

Less than a month ago, Hilary, 22, and Mike, who turns 30 on Sept. 11, got married at a private residence in Santa Barbara, Calif.

he did not take the deal to help the team he took the deal because he is a ****** hockey player and that’s all he was offered. stop calling him a hockey “star” he is FAR from it.

    Haters Suck! Says:

I think this move is more about mike trying to win a championship. The penguins are one of the best teams in the NHL with a lot of talent and Mike makes them better. If mike wants to win the Stanley Cup this was the right move for him to make. I think come June he’ll win himself another kind of ring.

The thought that Comrie can actually keep up on a line with Sidney Crosby is hilarious! Anyone that actually watches hockey knows Comrie sucks and the only reason people talk about him is because he’s Mr. Hilary Duff

    Jay Says:

So where are all the haters for this guy? He decides to take less money and go to a team that has great players and wins championships. Lebron does the same exact thing and he’s the most hated man in sports next to Tiger. Double standard much? I think so.

@Jay: The difference is he’s not their franchise player like Lebron was

Comrie took the deal with the Pens because no one else wanted him, that’s why he took the minimum. The Pens signed him because they have so much money tied up with their stars like Crosby, Staal and Malkin so they can’t afford much for wingers. If the Comrie Experiment doesn’t work he would probably get cut and get sent to the Baby Penguins team.

He’ll be out of the league in 2 years. Smart move to marry Hilary. He can be a stay at home Dad.

    OMEGA Says:

Well said @Brickhead! Comrie is a douche who just wants to ride Sidney Crosby’s coat tails to the playoffs. I need not remind everyone that he did nothing last season, since he was apparently “sick”. The Penguins are fools for signing him on.

Fools? We just got a winger for $500,000 when Billy wanted 3million. The roster is deep, he’ll probably end up in Scranton anyway. Billy wanted too much, he’s 40, and we couldn’t keep him. Picking up a winger for $500,00 is hardly foolish. And anyone who would bet agianst Ray Shero, well, is an idiot. I’d be happy to show you around the Burg Hilary…Welcome Mike.

anyone that actually watches hockey and has any knowledge of it knows that he is a mediocre player at best. he might be the nicest guy in the world but he is no star player. nhl players don’t take deals for the good of a team they take deals that are offered. period. this was all he was offered and he’s trying to save face. and don’t you dare compare him to lebron james… that’s ridiculous. if you aren’t a hockey fan don’t comment on the deal or the caliber of a player. you have no idea.

I am so glad there are people who understand hockey who posted before me. I was about to go off on the “spin” his agent is selling the non-sports press about him taking the pay cut to “help” the Penguins. Are you kidding me?! I have nothing against the guy. He’s an average enough player. I’m a Habs fan, but to suggest that a team that has a true star in Sidney Crosby, one of the best in the league, would need help from Mike Comrie?! Try selling that load of bull to a writer for Sports Illustrated. They’d laugh you off the phone before you could finish your sentence.

As a Pittsburgh Penguins fan since the Mario Lemieux & Jaromír Jágr days, I have to say that I don’t want this player to be with this team, just for the reason that he does not bring ANYTHING to the table. & I don’t understand why people like him as a player, it’s not like he sells out arenas or a fan favourite, people only know him because he married Hilary Duff. He is just a waste of money, space & the team will do better without him. Who knows, let’s see what’s going to happen this season in the NHL….

    habs&pens = FOREVER & ALWAYS

Consider this hockey experts? Ray Shero (the pens gm), continues to make savvy forward thinking moves that continue to bolster an already deeply talented offensive team. In signing Comrie, a career 20 goal scorer, and two time 30 goal scorer who is at the peak performance age of 29 at the bargain rate of 500,000 a year is ideal. If nothing else he has added an nhl ready depth forward. The pens are set three lines deep with all world centreman, so clearly to play regularly with a guy like the kid he would move to the wing, and believe you me a fire hydrant could put in a dozen goals a year skating with the best playmakers in the game. It is such a low risk high reward move that it couldn’t be passed up. In Sheros relatively short tenure running the club he has managed to sneak in a deal or two a year like this one in bringing in a veteran forward at low cost for a year or two ie; Mike Rupp, Bill Guerin, Arron Asham and now Comrie. And as history has shown these players along with others have become invaluable parts of a championship winning team. And the risk is so low.
What the price of the contract is or how and why the player signed is immaterial. And whether or not he trends up or down in his performance is also a wash, because there are certainly players around and behind him on the depth chart ready to take his place if he falters. But, what if it works out….You never know.
I didn’t see this move coming and I certainly am not a Comrie Apologist, but if I were told the Pens could get a 20 goal a year guy under 30 for league minimum I would have ran with it. Lets just see< and hey new beautiful building with one more beautiful fan to watch, how can you go wrong.
    Lets Go Pens!!!!
