Great news for those who weren’t lucky enough to make the trip to the south of France for the Cannes premiere of “Killing Them Softly”: At long last, the first trailer has arrived! The two-and-a-half-minute sneak peek offers an extended glimpse of Brad Pitt doing his gritty crime-drama best as Jackie Cogan, a hit man hired by a crime boss (Ray Liotta) to find and kill a pair of overzealous upstarts who attempt to stake their claim by robbing a high-profile card game staged by Liotta’s character.

The film also stars James Gandolfini, Sam Shepard, Richard Jenkins, Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn and is based on George V. Higgins’ 1974 Boston mobster novel “Cogan’s Trade.” Here are the five key scenes from the first full-length trailer:

Brad Pitt lives by the philosophy of Killing Them Softly in the first trailer for the film
    Aug. 1, 2012by: Niki Stephens

Probably like many of you, I’ve been anxiously waiting the next film from Andrew Dominik (CHOPPER, THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD).

All we’ve gotten so far from KILLING THEM SOFTLY is a still and a clip. Now we finally have the trailer, and it’s a damn good one too. Dominik certainly knows his audience. The story adapted from George V. Higgins 1974 novel, Cogan’s Trade is one filled with great lines, a good bit of violence, and if “Here Was a Man” by Johnny Cash is any indication, then we are in for some excellent music as well. I know you guys will really enjoy this so check it out below.

Adapted from George V. Higgins novel and set in New Orleans, Killing Them Softly follows professional enforcer, Jackie Cogan (Pitt), who investigates a heist that occurs during a high stakes, mob-protected, poker game. The film also features Scoot McNairy (Monsters), Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom), Ray Liotta, Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), with James Gandolfini, Vincent Curatola, Max Casella and Sam Shepard among others.

  • Dur

What do I think of the trailer, Jared? Well thanks for asking! It looks fantastic! There is a little slow motion Brad in it, that’s all it needs. Scoot’s part looks very very good as well.

‘Killing Them Softly’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes
Brad Pitt oozes cool in first sneak peek of the gritty crime drama.

    By Kara Warner (@karawarner)

    Cool Hand Brad
Before we saw Pitt as hit man Cogan, we knew the role would be a perfect way for the Oscar nominee to show off his effortless cool, which is exactly what he does as he questions the two nervous criminals, upsells the boss/moneyman (Richard Jenkins) and strolls casually through scenes sporting tinted aviator sunglasses, hair slicked back and a general casually cool swagger, all set to the tune of Johnny Cash’s “The Man Comes Around.”

    It’s All in a Name
It’s rare that we hear the basis for a film’s title in the dialogue of a trailer, but in this case, Pitt’s Cogan lays it out for us: “You ever kill anyone?” he asks someone casually. “They cry, they plead for their mothers. I like to kill ‘em softly,” he continues, “from a distance.” And with that brief line of dialogue, we learn all we need to know about Cogan’s work philosophy.

James Gandolfini, Back Where We Want Him
Gandolfini’s New York Mickey is not Tony Soprano, but he’s close enough to have us excited to watch the Emmy winner throw around some muscle and drink martinis. We don’t get to see Mickey and Cogan working side by side, but it’s clear that they both operate with a calm, no-nonsense approach to their work and that they are not to be messed with, as exemplified by Gandolfini’s one outburst in the trailer: “I don’t take orders from you!”

    Violence as Art
While the plot of the film is the familiar gritty crime drama, director Andrew Dominik (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”) has made the violence and crime almost balletic with his lateral camerawork and use of slow-motion in certain action scenes. He also seems to have neatly paired the violence with quiet moments of dialogue that keeps the story moving and the entertainment levels up.

    Quotes to Remember
Speaking of those quiet moments of dialogue, the brief snippets we hear from each and every castmember indicate that we’ll be quoting their lines when we leave the theater. In addition to the “kill them softly” line, Richard Jenkins puts things into perspective with his “This is a business of relationships” explanation for their hired-killers trade. The kicker, though, is the trailer’s final line of dialogue, as delivered by Pitt: “I’m living in America, and in America, you’re on your own.”

Check out everything we’ve got on “Killing Them Softly.”

Good morning fans, just checking for news and photos. Hoping we will get photos later today. Looking like it will be a slow news day.

JLo and Casper can have the headlines. Poor JLo will never learn. How can she excuse CS’s behavior after seeing home going into the sewer of NY sex industry. IMO you can get an STD just walking pass these shops buildings. When I used to work in Manhattan I would not even walk on that side of the street, I hope it’s changed now. I haven’t been near Times Square in about 10 years. Anyway, good luck to JLo.

waving hi to all the Jolie-Pitt fans from around the world!!! oh man, i didn’t think Brad could get any yummy!!! hot dayum!!! he is the epitome of “aging like fine wine”..i can honestly say i love how he evolved as an actor. especially, the person he has become. i was never a fan of his back then and only after Mr&Mrs. Smith:) for me, he was too beautiful to look at in meet joe black&Interview w/the Vampire..i know, as if that is a bad quality to have. lol..but only after i went back to really study his body of film work could i now appreciate it..i don’t know how to explain it. he really gave such vulnerability to his character in such a smooth subtle way. such a versatile actor..i mean if you can make “chad” enduring&loveable ..omg!! every time i think of B.A.R..i find myself cracking up..love him in that movie! man, but im loving this sexy bad boy hitman! cannot wait to see this! yes!!!

Like everyone else I’m waiting for Pitt’s movie to hit the theaters. I like that he takes on different characters and isn’t stuck in any one genre. He’s really taken hold of every aspect of his life from personal to career to humanitarian efforts.

Unfortunately I think her son’s death has made her even more bitter and vindictive. I hope that Usher has at least learned his lesson about taking his new girlfriend with him when he goes to the ex’s house to pick up his kids! Moron. If he does it again I full expect to hear that she doused them with gas and threw a match on them.

Hehehehehehehehehe. I saw Serena’s score. She put a hurt on Wozniacki. LOL! Maybe Little Miss SUnshine needs to dump Rory McIlroy…cuz they’ve both sucked since the marriage rumors started flying. Then again, Wozniacki just doesn’t have enough firepower. Being bubbly ain’t gonna win grand slams. Miss Denmark maybe…but not slams or Olympic gold..

  • Rose

@Jaye: Isn’t it just so satisfying when you decorate your home and it looks so beautiful, you just want everyone to see it. Do you love David Bromstead, I do, I just love most of the guys and girls. Do you like Home Goods?, Kirkland? I better stop before they kick me off the thread.
Jaye, you know we need a Jennipoo poem about JT living in NY while SS is in NC. If that was Brad and Angie the hens would be killing them with the break up talk. But with JA and JT apart, all we hear is cricket, cricket. Killing Them Softly trailer is awesome, can’t wait. Miss seeing Angie, hope we get a photo soon.

I like that he takes on different characters and isn’t stuck in any one genre. He’s really taken hold of every aspect of his life from personal to career to humanitarian efforts.

    *******************************

I was thinking the same thing. I think he’s played more diverse characters than anyone in the business. I’m so glad he didn’t go the TC route and play the same type of character in every movie. I remember an interview with Brad (many moons ago) where he said TommyGirl gave him the advice of finding a niche and sticking to it and you’ll have a hit every time. He said he fought hard to not find that comfortable niche but, instead, tried to find totally different characters for every movie.

As a young actor, you have to really admire him. It would have been very easy to play the same character over and over and just rake in the dough. He did it without taking the easy way out and look where he is now. You gotta love it!
