Lena Dunham: I Want People to Feel Normalized By Sex on 'Girls'

Lena Dunham is labeled The New Queen of Comedy on the cover of Vogue magazine’s February 2014 issue, on newsstands January 28.

Here’s what the 27-year-old Girls star, who posed for pics with her co-star Adam Driver, had to share with the mag:

On Girls being different from other shows: “There was a sense that I and many women I knew had been led astray by Hollywood and television depictions of sexuality. Seeing somebody who looks like you having sex on television is a less comfortable experience than seeing somebody who looks like nobody you’ve ever met. Critics said, ‘That guy wouldn’t date that girl!’ It’s like, ‘Have you been out on the street lately?’ Everyone dates everyone, for lots of reasons we can’t understand. Sexuality isn’t a perfect puzzle, like, ‘He has a nice nose and she has a nice nose! She’s got great breasts and he’s got great calves! And so they’re going to live happily ever after in a house that was purchased with their modeling money!’ It’s a complicated thing. I want people ultimately, even if they’re disturbed by certain moments, to feel bolstered and normalized by the sex that’s on the show.”

On being a private person: “No one would describe me as a private person, but I actually really am. It’s important for me to have a lot of time alone, and to have a lot of time in my house by myself. My entire life sort of takes place between me and my dog, my books, and my boyfriend, and my private world. To me, privacy isn’t necessarily equated with secret-keeping. What’s private is my relationship with myself.”

On her young self: “I thought of myself as relatively unpopular. It wasn’t anybody’s fault”I didn’t go to high school with mean kids”but I didn’t feel part of it. . . . I didn’t really start to feel like I had friends in a real way until I graduated from college and became engaged with the people I’d be engaged with professionally.”

Once again a regular size woman makes the cover of a major fashion magazine yet all you see is her face on the cover instead of a full body photo. :-/

  • SoCal

Dunham needs to shut the h*ll up, sit her fat @ss down and go the h*ll away.

  • tick

I still don’t know how that ugly fat woman ended up on TV. She either has connections in the industry or she is related to someone who does. Maybe someone from her synagogue since Hollywood is a well-known Jewish conspiracy.

  • Warren

I’d like to feel normalized and legalized with sex on girls 14-18.

  • The Brooklyn Bombshell

I caught one episode of this show it was pretty funny, atleast the scene I watched. I love her comments on sexuality and how it’s portrayed on television. There are people in the world who aren’t superficial, I’m not one of them, but, yeah.

Looks like these mags have made a HEAD SHOT only pact when it comes to fuller bodied girls. smh.

  • LOL

@BrooklynBombshell – Hi Lena Dunham… nice try saving your own ass.

I usually don’t comment when D-list dumb celebrities give “life advice” like they have actually lived life outside of hollywood or that they have any expertise in any field of study to be able to spew out life lessons. Lena Dunham doesn’t even have a good life, she’s not even a person anyone would look at and say “she’s someone I wish I was like”.

The only reason she wants people to be normalized by sex is because she grew up in a messed up household as her father was a perverted artist and her mother perverted photographer. HER normal is NOT everyone’s normal. People like Dunham need to open their eyes and realize that the world doesn’t revolve around them.

    @LOL: are you ok?

@LOL: Seek help please. You clearly have some issues.

it’s sad you had that much time to analyze somebody’s life. it appears like you need to have a sit down on a couch.

  • Sayer

She needs to keep her clothes on.

  • Doris

@Sayer: She isn’t fit, she’s overweight, she’s marked her body up with graffiti and she wants to normalize girl on girl sex. Vogue magazine should stick to fashion.

  • OK

@J.A.: Regular size??? I don’t know who your, people you know but I don’t know many people that are her size. BTW maybe SHE didn’t want he body on the cover. Melissa McCartney Elle cover was her in a huge coat that covered her entire body..her response SHE pick the coat. Why??? Because shes over weight and knows it . and don’t bother with the b*tch and, rude, and mean comments because its the truth ..

  • Sansa

@Warren: buy yourself prostitutes or toys creep

  • Axel

I see porn in her future and not the kind i would want to watch

  • Warren

@Sansa: Isn’t girl prostitutes still illegal? And I have my Miley and Hannah lifesize standups. Yeah, 14 is probably too young even though I see pregnant 12 year olds and nobody seems to get arrested?

  • Warren

Anyway, I was just making a joke on the title. I don’t even know who Lena is, but she looks OK. I’ve seen lots of heavier celebs. Crazy that no one complained about the racist comments??? They came for the Jews and I wasn’t Jewish….U all know the rest.

  • mike

I just find her completely narcissistic. I also don’t know why she is so into herself she obviously isn’t interested in looks walking around like that and she isn’t that great of a writer. A lot of the show is predictable. She is annoying

  • Bore

She’s absolutely narcissistic and a complete try-hard. It’s got nothing to do with her weight or average looks. Her show’s a vapid vehicle for her ponderous hipster ‘philosophy’. Normalise sex? OMG, isn’t she groundbreaking? In 2000 years they’ll be celebrating Dunham with the other major philosophers of the 21st century (e.g. Kim Kardashian and Beyonce look-at-me Carter) who helped shy girls become self-absorbed, narcissistic, navel-gazing, entitled, and neurotic urbanites who think they’re oh-so-hip.
Lena, you’re culturally irrelevant. You need to go and do a trek to India or adopt some orphans from Africa or whatever you do for the hipster spiritual transformation. Maybe that’ll make you shut up. Just don’t be tempted to write a book about what you saw in your TM session deep in the Nepalese mountains or whatever.

  • Bore

I’ll just point out that a lot of the cinema from Europe and Japan (and some from the US) has been normalising sex and the naked human body for decades. So don’t go around trying to claim you’re so progressive.

  • J.A.

@OK: I was actually thinking of Mindy Kaling not Melissa McCarthy since there was recent controversy about Mindy’s Elle cover. I called Lena regular size because that is how she is often described in the media. Melissa McCarthy may have felt more comfortable in her coat which is fine. She looked great to me. I think it would have been nice to see her shown wearing a dress or whatever outfit she chose. Same goes for Lena and Mindy. Fashion magazines are about showing the latest clothing designs and ultimately selling the clothing featured in the photos so why not show the full outfit on the cover regardless of the size of the cover girl. I know the reason for that, which isn’t very kind, but it would be nice if women of all sizes were treated the same.

  • Bear

Some of the stuff on Girls is good but it seems like it’s all her – let me write, direct and star in my life, which I will make into a TV show. What’s original about that? What will she ever direct for the screen, small or big, besides the stuff of her own life? Seems petty and uninspired. Though bad choice for Vogue to cut off her body and just use her head. Says a lot.

  • OK

@J.A.: she does NOT look great to me and I don’t care what the media says about her

  • Bore

I hated SATC for much the same reasons but seriously, at least those four silly women had nice clothes to look at.

  • Perry Tanko

Lena Dunham is a disgusting, talentless pig.

  • barron797

I’m not sure why the show Girls is as popular as it is. I’ve watched all of the episodes at least twice and its sort of entertaining but kinda odd and unrelatable. A lot of the characters are losers and not likable (like Lena’s onscreen boyfriend).

I guess Lena Dunham works hard to make the show happen and I give her props for that but I don’t think her work is genius or anything.

As for her Vogue feature, I think its a huge accomplishment for a girl who is not so model-y to make the cover. Props for her on that too.
