Robert Downey, Jr. Releases Statement on Son Indio's Arrest

Robert Downey, Jr. has released a statement following his 20-year-old son Indio‘s arrest for cocaine possession over the weekend.

“Unfortunately there’s a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it. Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he’s capable of being,” the 49-year-old Iron Man actor said in his statement (via TMZ). “We’re grateful to the Sheriff’s department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale.”

In some more positive news for Robert, he was just named the Most Powerful Actor in the World by Forbes for the mag’s Celebrity 100 list.

This is sad and tragic, and private family business and not ours and not “news” or “newsworthy”. Addiction is very complicated and challenging…and heartbreaking for everyone near. Let them cope with this in peace. I wish them all the best.

  • Love The Shoes

He’s very VERY correct in that there can be a genetic component. Addiction is addiction and there are those that it’s not about psychological but the physical and that’s were genetics make the possibility and of alcohol, narcotic, tobacco addiction a probability. That does not mean they can’t be helped. Just look at Robert Downy Jr. I wish them wellness.

Cherrie, bless you for your understanding and mature response to this post.

  • LOL

Is addiction genetic? I’m not disputing it but I am also wondering has this been established by the medical community as fact.
If it is a fact…it’s sad because people who have money and access to $$$ have nothing to stand in their way between them and drug dealers who will gladly supply these young kids.

  • Cruizin596

There is a genetic predisposition to alcohol and drug addictions. There are actually help groups for children of alcoholics and drug addicts.

  • huh

    Just another spoiled rich brat.

I also think growing up in Hollywood couldn’t have helped. Look at Michael Douglas’ son and countless others.

I think 95% of families have their problems no matter what. Its just that when its a celeb. the world makes it so they live in a glass house . They don’t get the chance to recover properly because while trying to be open & honest to get out all the things within that cause 90% of whats going wrong they are stuck in a life of secrecy that they have been raised in because of the media&press . This is a sad price to pay to share their talent with us.

Umm…Robert has only been sober for like…10 years maybe? I think it’s hard to distinguish between genetics and environment in this case when the kid grew up seeing his father’s struggles up until the age of like 10-12. That is bound to affect a child psychologically, don’t you think? Growing up as a celebrity kid probably gives you access to all kinds of things. I’m sure it’s all very confusing.

  • tim

another useless kid from a famous parent, but it’s better to have a drug problem than pretend they can be actors or models

  • freya

I felt bad for you that you were raise in a very judgmental environment.
Your parents must be so tyrannical hellbent on trying to force you to grow up to their unbelievable expectation that you did not achieve, and that’s why you impose their believes in others.
Sorry to burst your bubble but Indio was rarely in the news cavorting with his rich and famous peers to exhibit the all the cliche signs of your identification of what a spoiled brat is until now. And yes there is a genetic predisposition that he can be that. But there could be other explanation there too until then just shut your trap

@LOL: There is actually NO predisposition in drug addiction….I am studying and researching in this at Uni at the current moment and some study show that there might be a predisposition for alcool addiction but not drug addiction like cocaine! I personnaly think there are trying to make up and excuse because it is so easy to say so with the genetic part! The biggest reason why a lot of children from ex-addict become addict is psychological, they might have seen their parent do it…or heard about it…the way they are raised….the environment they are raised in…the predisposition factors VS the protections factors…

RDJ already been sober for more than 10 years now, didn’t Indio learned and saw how drug almost destroyed his dad?

  • Andromeda

The boy probably feels very inferior alongside his dad’s huge success. It’s not too surprising he took to drugs to numb the pain of inadequacy he probably feels on a daily basis. The only hope for him is that he finds something that he really loves doing which is preferably far away from the Hollywood lifestyle, and hopefully he’ll meet some good people along the way.

The first words out of Roberts mouth are excuses. Genetics or not, Indio should never have taken that first hit.
