Ben McKenzie Suffers Head Injury on 'Gotham' Set

Ben McKenzie had a scary moment on the set of his show Gotham – and it all happened on his birthday as well.

The 36-year-old actor suffered an injury to his head when he ran into a concrete pillar on Friday (September 12) in New York City.

“Happy Birthday to me. Fight sequence gone awry. Don’t ram your head into concrete pillars kids. #gotham,” Ben wrote on Instagram. He later added a picture of the gash with the caption “Holy concrete wall, Batman!”

The next day, Ben updated his fans on his condition.

“Doc Sherman at New York-Presbyterian, you are a career saver. Thanks for stitching me up nice. Back to work Monday,” Ben wrote.

Oh, that looks nasty. At least he manages to keep a sense of humor and is polite and gracious to the doctor. I’m guessing that wasn’t part of the plan for the day.

Feel better, Ben. It’s about a week to Gotham’s premiere and can’t wait.

  • otterly so

So that’s an unforgettable birthday and probably a daily reminder too. Take care and feel better, Ben. I hope you’re okay to hit the ground running this week to get back to Gotham and probably the media mayhem to get things rolling. Be careful!

Can’t wait to see you in your new role, coming very soon now.

I know that he’s done his own stunts all along, but Southland had the the footage on film and the Emmy to prove it, he didn’t have to draw blood! That’s taking authentic to a different level!

Happy birthday? I hope Ben makes a quick recovery and stays clear of that dangerous concrete. It has his number.

    Ready for Gordon in Gotham!

Poor guy! That had to, okay has to, hurt. Good for him for being able to make light of it and especially for thanking the doctor for the needlework.

I’m counting down to watching Ben on Gotham too, but no more trips to the hospital, please!

  • shayes

Ouch! That hurts just to look at. Heal quickly, Ben! Ready, set and good to go for next Monday.

  • game on

I’d call that taking it to extremes to make it real and also taking one for the team. Way above and beyond the call of duty, Mr. McK. Take it easy and feel better ASAP. Keep up the intensity, but keep it safe! Go, Gotham.

    @slainte:

Well said. Keep smiling, Ben. Watch your step and kudos to the doctor. I’m sure he doesn’t get enough thank you’s!

  • jjtor24

Glad to see that Ben’s in good spirits and that he’s going to be okay. It looks like a nasty gash. Also glad to see that he doesn’t forget his good manners, even under less than ideal circumstances!

Try for a better birthday next year, Ben!

  • gojee

Ow! New scar and night at the hospital on your birthday wish list? You just gave Gordon a nasty looking flesh wound with no makeup necessary. Let the makeup people use the fake stuff and try to make it look real instead from now on! I hope the rest of your birthday was less bloody. Looking forward to the whole season starting next Monday!

It’s a good thing that you have a hard head, Ben. A great doctor helps too, so giving him credit is spot on. This would be a memorable birthday, just not the right way. Heal up and keep your sense of humor about it all! Looking tough.

  • maho

Talk about an original birthday present and way to celebrate. It looks like a nasty cut and that kind of “battle” must have gotten brutal. Concrete has attitude. I’m glad it’s just a flesh wound. Any time you hit your head, it can be scary and dangerous. Speedy recovery.

  • nevis

That’s rough looking. I feel a headache coming on. So glad that Ben’s okay, in good spirits and remembered to thank the doctor. Probably not the best birthday, on the other hand.

Here’s to a fast recovery and a great year for Ben.

  • oh-two

OUCH! I guess the post, wall, whatever looks a little worse for the wear too? Keep smiling and heal up, Ben. So Gordon will have a new scar for street cred. There’s got to be an easier way!

  • pax_7

Somehow, Dr. Sherman’s last name in Ben’s thank you jumped right out because it’s the same as Ben’s Southland character. Ironic, much?

Echo on the “OW, ” but Ben’s a trooper and keeping his sense of humor and manners to boot. Hoping for a speedy recovery, a healthier year and a hit with Gotham!

  • lleyton

I’d go with scary too if that’s how it looked after. That is a big, deep, nasty gash, so he had to hit hard. As bad as it looks and as sore as Ben must be, he’s got to be lucky, too. It could have been so much worse. I’m glad he can keep it all in perspective and take it in stride. How about a different kind of birthday gift next year?
