Simon Cowell Slams Zayn Malik for Calling One Direction's Music 'Generic'

Simon Cowell is responding to Zayn Malik‘s comments about One Direction‘s music, calling the sound “generic as f*ck.”

The 22-year-old entertainer told The Fader last month, “If I would sing a hook or a verse slightly R&B, or slightly myself, it would always be recorded 50 times until there was a straight version that was pop, generic as f—, so they could use that version. Whenever I would suggest something, it was like it didn’t fit us.”

“There was just a general conception that the management already had of what they want for the band, and I just wasn’t convinced with what we were selling,” Zayn continued. “I wasn’t 100 percent behind the music. It wasn’t me. It was music that was already given to us, and we were told this is what is going to sell to these people. As much as we were the biggest, most famous boy band in the world, it felt weird. We were told to be happy about something that we weren’t happy about.”

Simon gave an interview to The Mirror, where he was asked about Zayn‘s comments.

“It is a bit rude to the people who wrote all the hits with them. And to the other band members. I mean they all wrote a lot of the stuff,” Simon said. “I think once he has had a chance to reflect on everything he will probably reconsider what he’s said because it was a very, very democratic process in the band.”

Zayn is so rude and ungrateful !!

  • Gina

Simon, the king of rude, calling someone rude. One Direction’s music is generic, so where is the lie?

  • Esmeralda

Why can’t the kid have a damn opinion? It’s his truth. Not ours. We all see things from our own very perspective.

  • Guestz

Simon can’t stop with his smear campaign against Zayn, can’t he? He is criticizing Zayn for the narrative he imposed on him. The process was far from democratic and Zayn was terribly mistreated. Zayn spoke out about very little.

This article is atrocious. There are too many inaccuracies and ugly bs in the comments section. Please defend Zayn

He doesn’t have to be grateful to somebody who ruined his reputation, spread false narratives at his expense, or restricted his artistic gifts.

He doesn’t have to be grateful to people who aren’t his friends. Zayn didn’t even say anything rude in his interview. He was ambiguous and expressed restraint.

  • Nicola

How? He simply stated a fact. The music the group released is no different than the music of any other boy band that came before them.

  • Gina

I agree. I’ll take a look at the article. Thanks.

Simon’s memory is not good enough to remember what the truth is. There is absolutely nothing democratic about the way 1D has been managed. Simon is a fraud. 1D has been told what to say, told what to do, told what to sing, told how to sing it & told to be happy. Simon is clever. He tries to make out that Zayn was dissing his brothers. He was not. He was dissing management deservedly.

Simon should reflect on his own rotten past & unbusinesslike practices. Anyway Zayn now has professional management in the capable hands of Sarah Stennett.

Simon is a manipulative disgrace. He saw that the cracks were appearing in 1D. Cared nothing about their mental health or feelings & sent them out on OTRA. OTRA was a mistake. A bridge too far in the name of greed & money. The boys should have taken 2015 off, made their new album & toured in 2016. All the boys hate Simon. Notice how uncomfortable they are to share the same stage with him these days. Don’t for 5 seconds believe there is anything benevolent about Cowell. It’s all greed & money. Look at all the failures in his past. He is lucky that he had very wealthy parents to endlessly bail him out! People should read the Fader article before making fools of themselves. Simon chooses to misconstrue what Zayn said!

Simon is no paragon of virtue. He knocked up his best friends wife!

The thing is that he was ok with it at first, One Direction gave him fame. He just sounds ungrateful, yes it was generic, but all that generic music made him a star, gave him a lot of money. He should just say he outgrew the band and wanted to grow as an artist, that’s all.

Agree with you, I guess he is certainly right, but let’s be real, he wouldn’t be where he is now, and couldn’t afford to do his own thing, if it wasn’t for the band and their “generic” music.
He can talk about his truth all he wants but he shouldn’t spit at something that made him a star IMO.
