Disney Having Trouble Casting Aladdin's Leading Roles

Disney’s Aladdin is one of the newest live action films coming to the big screen, but apparently there have been some behind-the-scenes problems with casting.

The two main leads, Aladdin and Jasmine, are reportedly proving difficult to cast for Disney, THR reports. According to the publication, 2,000 actors and actresses have read for the roles. The role of Aladdin, particularly, has proven challenging as they are looking for actors of Middle-Eastern or Indian descent who can act and sing, and producers are determined to do justice to the beloved character.

For the role of Jasmine, Disney is looking at Power Rangers actress Naomi Scott, 24, or Indian actress Tara Sutaria, 21. For Aladdin, producers have brought in Dutch actor Achraf Koutet, Canadian actor Mena Massoud and American George Kosturos, and more.

Shooting for the film was originally planned for July, but has been pushed back to August. Will Smith is set to play the iconic role of the Genie.

Just for the further notice India is not in Middle East!! so casting an indian as middle eastern not diffirent than casting a caucasian

  • tia maria

They are looking for actors who can sing and act, not dancers. Not all actors can sing and vice versa, not all singers can act.

  • Casey C

again, Bollywood. they all sing and act. most of them, very well. Broadway would have no shows if it was so hard to find actors that can sing and act

Aladdin was set in China with the sorcerer coming from North Africa so either way with Disney moving it to a fictional city in a never defined country so…

  • tia maria

Just because India is home to Bollywood does not mean that they all sing and act. Obviously, there will be other criteria they will also have to meet to get the role.

The people at BlindGossip think it’ll be Zayn Malik.

In a perfect world Zayn would be cast, but I think he’d be too shy & nervous to take on the role.
