Tom Welling Is Glad He Didn't Wear Superman's Tights on 'Smallville'

Tom Welling has already opened up about the ending of Smallville and how we never got to see Clark Kent in the Superman outfit.

The 40-year-old actor talked about the series finale a little bit more during an appearance on The Talk on Friday (November 3) in Los Angeles.

“One of the things when we started the show was that it was going to be about Clark in high school. It was not going to be about Superman. So at the end of the series, it was about trying to put Clark in the position where you knew he was going to become Superman, but you couldn’t go with him. But we hope the fans felt like it was good that they knew Clark was out there being Superman,” Tom said.

Sara Gilbert than asked Tom if he was happy with the ending and he said, “very much so.”

“I wasn’t exactly excited with the idea of getting into tights anyways, so it worked out,” Tom added.

Tom Welling's 'Smallville' Cast Rallied for Him to Get a Driver, Just Like KJ Apa's Cast

The cast of Riverdale has been rallying behind KJ Apa after the actor got into a car accident due to a long workday that led to him falling asleep behind the wheel. This is something similar that happened on the set of Smallville over a decade ago.

In a podcast that was released only this month, Tom Welling and his co-star Michael Rosenbaum revealed how the cast rallied to get Tom a driver due to the long hours he was put through on the set of Smallville.

“All of us are driving to a location at 4:30 a.m. with one eye open and you’re in every scene. I think it got to a point where we all like signed a letter for you because we’re like ‘You’re going to kill Superman,’” Michael said.

Tom added, “Unbeknownst to me, because I was just told it was already done, but you all signed something, because we weren’t allowed to have drivers for some reason, but yeah, I was getting up at 4:30, driving an hour and a half, working an 18-hour day then driving back, sleeping five hours. And you guys were like, ‘Well, he’s gonna die. He’s gonna run into a tree and the show’s gonna be over.’ So you guys kind of gave up, you waived your rights to ‘If one had a driver, everybody had a driver.’ So, I got a driver and it was a big difference.”

WBTV has said all of the people working on Riverdale are allowed to call a taxi or have a driver take them home when they are working long hours.

Tom Welling Explains Why He Never Wore Superman Suit in 'Smallville'

Tom Welling played a young Clark Kent in the hit series Smallville, but something you never got to see throughout the series was him suiting up as Superman.

At the end of the series finale, Tom ripped opened his button-down shirt and you saw the Superman logo on the suit, but he was shown from a distance while flying away.

Years later, Tom is finally opening up about the decision to not show Clark in action as Superman.

“It was something that we discussed before we ever shot the pilot with [creators] Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar],” Tom said in an interview with EW. “We literally had a sit down where we talked about the show and I asked about the suit and the tights and the flying, and they said, ‘No, absolutely not,’ part of the reason being is that show is about a teenager trying to figure out who he is. They felt that once Clark put on the cape and the suit, life became too easy, in a sense. They wanted to focus on who this character was before that. And, at the time, because of where visual effects and special effects and stunts were, it would be too expensive. That’s mainly why they save that for movies, more or less.”

Tom explained that there was an idea to have Clark put on the suit in the beginning of the episode and save Lois Lane on a plane, but that idea was shot down.

“We jumped onto this idea that at the end of the show, the idea is that Clark becomes Superman and he’s out there, and we know he’s out there, but we can’t go with him, but that we know and we feel good that he’s out there doing good,” Tom said. “That was what we strove for, and I think we hit it. I liked the ending of the series, because it’s like, ‘Yes, he did it!’ I hope the audience didn’t feel like we didn’t show them something that they needed to see. I felt like we gave them the jumping off point for their imagination as to what could happen.”

Next up for Tom is a recurring role on the Fox series Lucifer!

Would Tom Welling Reprise 'Smallville' Role on CW's 'Supergirl'? He Responds...

Tom Welling and his Lucifer co-star Lauren German pose on the red carpet together at the FOX 2017 Summer TCA Tour after party on Tuesday (August 8) in West Hollywood, Calif.

While on the red carpet, Tom, 40, was asked if he would ever reprise his Smallville character of Clark Kent on the current CW series Supergirl starring Melissa Benoist in the title role.

“No, and I mean that respectfully,” Tom told TV Guide. “It’s a different tone. That show is great; it does really well, but I don’t think the character I played exists in that world.”

Tom Welling Joins 'Lucifer' Cast, First TV Role Since 'Smallville'!

Cool news was announced at Comic-Con for fans of Fox’s Lucifer and actor Tom Welling!

The 40-year-old actor is set to return to television for the first time since Smallville in a role on the third season of Lucifer.

Tom is set to play “Marcus Pierce, an accomplished police lieutenant who is everything Lucifer (Tom Ellis) is not – strategic, reserved and well-respected. However, they also both have a lot in common, like being charming, handsome and incredibly charismatic. So when Pierce begins to develop a connection with Decker (Lauren German), Lucifer’s devilish traits are inflamed,” according to THR.

Just like Smallville, Lucifer is based off a character from the DC Comics franchise!
