“I always just write and worry about the consequences later,” James told Tribe magazine. “That was something Amy Hemple taught me: don’t ever not write something because you are afraid of someone’s reaction if you publish it, just write it. You can decide to publish or not publish later.”
He continued, saying: “But what usually ends up happening is that by the time you’re ready to publish the person moves out of your life, or dies, or doesn’t care what you write. On the other hand, I do have a ton of work that I have put away in a drawer because I know in my particular situation people will be looking for material to hang me on. So, I can publish all that stuff when I’m sixty and no one cares what I did when I was in my thirties.”
