Ezra Miller Talks the Importance of Queer Visibility in the Media

Ezra Miller looks so handsome in a photo from his spread in Gay Times‘ Gay Pride issue, available now.

Here’s what the 25-year-old actor had to share with the mag:

On the importance of queer visibility: “Having been a mentally ill, disaffected queer youth, I know how much it can matter to see queer people surviving and thriving. Being loved, and loving themselves, life and the world. We all know vaguely the statistics of suicide among queer youth, and the murder of queer and gender nonconforming people. Promoting visibility is a really powerful tool against that.”

On what his band Sons of an Illustrious Father represents: “In terms of representing otherness, in some way that’s very natural to us – very inevitable in that we are people who have always felt ‘other’ in the world. Then at the same time it’s very important to recognize the privileges we all have, mostly as white people. It takes somewhat of a diligence and when creating we should include perspectives that are not just those that we regularly come by.”

On the queer relationship with the current political climate: “I think what can be really powerful at this time is to create for ourselves a mode of response and a mode of care, where we can both respond to the intense and constant and ridiculous hellstorm of these times. But we can also care for ourselves and make space to care for ourselves, so we can do that and do it effectively, so that attempting to respond or stay present with this constant barrage of atrocities doesn’t overcome us as individuals and as a collective across the earth. In trying to respond to it, we have to continue to care for ourselves and each other, and even doing that is a radical act in a time that’s full of such rampant carelessness.”
