Lil Nas X Addresses Backlash After Coming Out as Gay: 'They Just Want That Reaction'

Lil Nas X is getting candid about coming out.

The 20-year-old “Old Town Road” rapper appeared for an interview on BBC America on Friday (July 5).

He said that he considered taking his sexual orientation “to the grave” and never publicly addressing it, but he didn’t “want to live my entire life… not doing what I want to do.”

“I’m also, I feel like, opening the doors for more people,” he went on to say, adding that he hopes it helps people “feel more comfortable” about coming out.

Still, he recognized that being gay is “not really accepted in either the country [or] hip-hop communities.”

When asked about backlash, he said: “Oh, I’m already getting it. I used to be that person being negative. I’m not angry or anything [about it], because I understand how they just want that reaction.”
